Noob here... first post.

Recently became reacquainted with my old Bucks. I have a 110 plain, 112 finger grooved and a Woodsman, all of which are between 18-25 years old. I sorta lost track of them within all my stuff over the years, but "found" them now that I am deeply involved with Scouting (among other things :D ). My fascination with blades has risen to new heights!

Anyway, I had forgotten that my 110 was wounded, thanks to a bit of clumsiness on my part some time ago. The tip of the blade is broken off, thanks to a fall...

My question is... being that it's an older version, what will become of this vintage steel? It's most likely destined for replacement (blade, anyway) as it doesn't seem repairable, and I know that functionally it will be the same, but athstetically...

Thoughts? (as I box it up for return). Should I really care as long as it works?

Thanks all... Matt

Matt,
Mail it back to Buck and they will put a brand new 420HC steel blade in it for you and it will look and function just fine. 420HC, with the heat treatment that Buck does is really a good steel. I'm not sure if they're still doing it, but if you contact Joe Houser of Buck (He is the moderator of thte Buck portion of this forum) he may be able to replace it with S30V steel for a nominal fee ($35 when I last checked, it may have gone up). In either case they (Buck) will take good care of you.

Welcome to the forum! :)
Depending on how much of the tip is gone, we can always regrind a new one for you. The other option is a new blade of 420hc as mentioned earlier.
(I should also mention that we dont do the blade upgrades anymore so getting a new blade of s30v is no longer an option. )

I hope this helps.

Seems I remember some discussing a while back about new blades not fitting all that well in old frames.

Depending on how much of the tip is gone, and the blade is still good and tight, you may consider just reprofiling it.

Just consider that if it is sentimental to you, it could come back as a new knife....should they not be able to fix it as is.

If it is sentimental,,, and you don't want a new replacement, best state so when you send it in. If you don't include a note, and don't address it to Joe Houser,,,,it is up to the warranty guys as to how you gt it back.

And like I said, there was a thread here some time ago about there not being any more old type blades. and they are different than the new ones.

then again,,,may just be something I dreamed.... older n dust does that sometimes...

Well, I finally got around to sending the knife in, and had them re-profile it... and it came back home today, looking brand spankin' new! Beautiful! Thanks Joe H. and the great people at Buck for squaring me away...

It was a pleasure doing business with ya... and I will do more!
