110 FingerGroove FG

I can't give you a date for the first FG, but I have a Four Dot that I compared to your photo. Yours looks like an after-market modification to me, too. Your first three gooves are definately deeper then they are on mine. Whoever did it, did a good job, though. I'm a fan of the FG models for sure.

...The finger grooved 110's came out around 1982 IIRC as a 4 dot...They came out just prior to the edges being radiused by Buck for the "softer" feel...They are identical to the 8th version, 1st variation, except frames have hand radiused edges. The thumb depression cut out is not radiused...Inverted stamp knives with finger grooves were done in someone's garage or at lunch time by Buck employees...:eek::p

The only thing I can add is that it is possible that the knife was done as part of an incentive system at Buck. Supervisors put together a plan where if the employee hit their production numbers, they could earn the right to customise a 110 for themselves. Its impossible to know if your knife falls into that category though.
This thread has me thinking that I need to finish the 110 data sheet. I stopped the research at 2 dot versions and I have since accumulated a lot more "stuff" to hopefully help fill in some holes in the 3 and 4 dot 110s.
This will be a fun project, I get to play with knives!! :D

I looked thru my notes and luckily i found what i wrote down about this knife when i bought it.

The guy I got this from lives in San Diego California, he told me he got this
knife from a guy who was an employee of buck knives, and the fingergrooves
were done by the employee.

So the employee was the first owner, the guy i got it from was the second
owner and i'm the third owner.

THE four dot FG 110's in our data sheets state came out in 1981 but George Stenzel says in his presentation they came out in 1982. So, flip a coin. DM

i asked 'The Master'
{Leroy Remmer} :D
about finger groves last time i saw him..
he said that was a common request untell they were offered as a factory version..
some of them were radical and "nary'' as he put it..
he still gets request to put the old fashon style finger groves on the 110
old fashion or 'early' being that the grove runs up in the brass were the new does not..

Hey maybe Leroy did a special request on this 3 dot of mine...it really is to good a job for the average MOD project.

Larry Oden has told me that 3dot FG's do exist and he has one. I've not seen one.Maybe this is one? Do you have the box and papers?Nice 3dot FG.DM

No Box or papers.
I really like the look of these FGs. Maybe there just a garage mod but maybe not.

How in the world did George Stenzil get his name in this thread? That guy drives me crazy! ;) But its only because he carries more 110 data in his head than I have in my folders. I am always playing catch up with that guy!
Anyway, I started the 3 dot, 4 dot, FG, first date coded 110 project. Preliminary observations are that we did not do any production FG's on the 3 dot.
I have a Buck catalog that was printed in 3/82 that does not show the FG's. The next catalog I have was printed in 12/82 and it does show the FG's.
We know that we went to the 4 dot in 1981 so...
But we do not know exactly when we went to 4 dot in 81 or exactly when we started making fg's. Its close enough in time that you could not rule out the possibility of a 3 dot FG.

Big John, I'll take you up on that coffee. I'm really looking forward to that show!

So, Larry may have a 3 dot FG. But it must be the way George configures the years as he stated it in the 20yr. reunion DVD's. DM

I got this a couple of years age and asked about it on this fourum. At some point bikers adopted the 110 as their official knife and took to making alterations such as finger groves. This was so common that one of the motorcycle magazines wrote an article on how to pimp out your 110.

The 3 dot fingergroove 110 I have came from a former Buck sales rep who indicated it was a sample he was provided when Buck was seeking input from dealers on adding fingergrooves. It is very well done. I am sure there were not many of these made.

I recently bought a 3 dot finger groove. Mirror polished blade with solid rosewood scales and no rivets. I would guess someone has modified it since it left the factory, but they sure did a nice job. I sure do like it though. Love having a finger groove with a 440C blade.

Larry,

How does your FG 3dot compare to mine. Is the grooving similar? I guess I would like your opinion of whether this is a Do-It-Yourselfer modification.

Heck, how about posting a picture of yours. Thanks g
