110 or 112 for Birth Year?

I have four boys (ages 10-17). As my oldest will be 18 soon, I want to give them each a birth year knife, but am torn between a 110 or a 112. Personally, even at 51 years old, I carry a 112 much more than my 110s.

We camp and hike, but none of them are hunters. They're probably just going to shove it in a drawer until they are older, but as far as eventual usage, I think a 112 will likely get more use. But a 110 is just classic...

Any thoughts or experiences doing the same for your kids/grandkids?

Either is a great choice. I like both and alternate carrying them depending on my mood that day. The 112 is a bit easier to carry in a pocket depending on the typical attire they may wear through the years. Not everyone can or likes to carry a sheath on the belt, so a 112 gets the nod if pocket carry is a possibility.

If it is intended as just a keepsake, then the 110 is indeed the classic Buck. For daily use, I find the 112 a more suitable choice.

Good input here, thanks guys. Not a ton of consensus, but it seems like the jist is the 110 is more classic and 112 maybe more practical for most.

I think that I decided that I'm going to base it on a kid by kid basis. My 17yo is more of a 112 type, so I found a NiB 2008 112. I'll carry it a while before I gift it to him. My 14yo is more old school, so I'll be on the lookout for a nice 2011 110, and so on.

I have my dad's old Ka-Bar 1189 hunter that he carried A LOT, and while it has a lot of sentimental value, I rarely ever carry it. 110 size, but squared edges, was sharpened a lot so it's thick behind the edge, etc. I'd rather have something that I'd use more.

One very small point to consider is legality.. Some City's and states have a blade length for concealed carry of under 3"..In fact that's why the 112 model was made. I consider the best variation is drop or spear point, Bare headed horn/textured for grip in NS.. with any super steel.
