110 or 112 or 119 and why?

Working from home today so I'm at the keyboard with several knives from the pile sitting by my mouse. What? I'm the only person here who does this? :D Anyway...

Right now next to my mouse I have my (new to me) 2 dot 112, my (owned since the 70s) 2 dot 110, and a (recent gift) Case 316-5 (5" fixed blade) which will act as a stand in for a 119 for the sake of this discussion.

Which do you prefer and why?

Here's what I'm thinking.... I'm thinking my beloved and long owned 110 might be gathering dust in the future.

The 112's size, handle shape and balance make it a much, much better EDC and utility knife compared to the 110. It's not even close for me. I can pocket both (I wear carpenter jeans most day) just fine but 3" blade of the 112 is very useful and less threatening to non-knife folks. Also, the balance on the 112 is just amazing.

The 110 is a nice hunting knife. I appreciate the longer blade for that, no question. But next to a fixed blade knife (like the Case 316-5 or Buck 118), it's heavy and not as long. I can't see a reason to carry the 110 over a fixed blade hunting other than the fact that in it folds and goes into a fanny pack better.

But this is just my ramblings based on my current usage.

Would really love to hear from others on which they carry, and why?

Knives are a personal preference. I use the 110 in S30V configuration for field work in my deer doins. S30V stays sharper longer and I can go through several deer before touching it up.

I also use the new fillet knife in S30V in the field for quartering and peeling out the backstrap, as it has a longer reach.

I edc a 179 folder as it has a nice clip that works well in the back jeans pocket. If I anticipate any heaver work, I will slip one of the orange bucklite 426 in the pocket as well.

It is nice that we have so many different bucks to match to our personal preferences.

Oh yeah,,,right now on my desk is a 426 orangie, a fake 110 auto, a 175, two Cat 1 V1 112's, a cat2 V1 112, and an 819SS. oops...almost missed the 470 mentor. :eek::D

well dang,,,there lays a tiny titanium...:cool:

Pack Rat, could you say more on your pref for the 110 over a fixed blade for deer cleaning?

Sure...its a folder. Easier to carry on the belt, and I do use a cordura horizontal sheath for ease of being out of the way in and out of the truck, as well as tossing it in the washing machine at the end of the season. Leather sheath sometimes if we are at something like a wild game dinner or some feed put on by the local sporting good feed store before season opens.

Plus,,,I have no problem opening and closing a 110 with one hand.

Just one of those what I became accustomed to kind of things. And that's not to say that there is a couple of 118's in D2 in the truck or back pack.

And, maybe because I have been using one for deer doins since the mid 70's. Until the last 4 or 5 years, used the 110 exclusively, till I started using a 121 to reach in a little easier with the longer blade.

Then, I have numerous 110's so easy to have extras along for others that failed to bring a blade, or theirs has gone dull.

My 2 dot 110 is my only hunting knife. It's also my first choice for a day hike. The 110 is great in areas where a 119 or other 5"-6" fixed blade will draw a lot of unwanted attention.

The only other bucks I have are a 500 and a 501. The 501 makes for a great pocket knife, just the right size. Non threatening to the sheeple. The 500 doesn't see much use, it suffers from being the size compromise in the middle. Too big to EDC w/o a sheath or pouch. No sense in taking it on a hike since the 110 has served so well for so long.

Another point for me, 110 vs 112. The 112 does not fill up my hand, like a 110.
I want a knife handle extending past my pinkie.

110 is my favorite all around knife. 112 is fine but smaller than my paw allows. 119 is a great knife but larger than necessary for whitetail IMHO, 105 or 113 work fine(116 and 102 for that matter). Fixed blade is just easier to clean since no pivot to get fatted up. In the end though, I like to try em all out. I intend to hunt with my new 415 camo Kalinga next year at least for 1 deer.

and I always have a 110 in my jeans as a backup just in case.

Ok,,here's more. We/I have done enough deer that going inside isn't the handful of blood and guts that it once was. After field dressing one, very little blood on hands or body of the knife. We carry those baby wipes in the truck and they take care of that. After the deer is quartered and in an ice chest, the knives are wiped off and go in there with it, or them. Then back at camp they get a hot water wash and scrubbed. Rarely any gunk down inside, but a brush takes care of that. Which goes for any knife we are using.

Also, the 118 isn't dramatically longer than the 110. You have to go to a 105 or 121 to gain blade length. Then the new fillet knife in S30V is even longer than the 121 at a little over 6 inches of blade and over 11 inches oal and full tang.

Just tossing all this out as info. Not trying to change any minds. Just what works for me. Much of this has been an evolution over the years, of trying numerous different knives. But in all, nothing has as yet replaced the 110, altho this past season I did use one of the orange bucklite 426's a lot. Maybe oldage and that light weight knife with the same blade as a 110 might be my next evolution.

Will look forward to a report after you try that 415. :)

If I were to choose I would take the 112 for EDC and a fixed blade for hunting/fishing/outdoors. I guess all 3 of them would work but the 112 is a better size for EDC, and a fixed blade is easier to clean after.

112=EDC
110=Hunting,Camping,EDC occasionally(horizontal/discreet carry)
119= fondling,oogling,admiring :)

The 110 fits my hand, the 112 doesn't. I tried hard for years to like the 112 but it just was not for me. Lot going for the 112, but if it doesn't fit you it has to go.

Daily for me it's a 110 when in uniform and Vantage when in civy cloths. Usually, with a Companion in my weak-hand pocket to be PC and for small work.

I like the 501 for edc its big enough to do what ever is needed and hardly noticable.
I've always loved "sheath knives" and want to carry them, but I find that to much stuff hanging on you gets caught when going thru brush and such.
So when hunting or fishing I always carry a knife bag in the truck with a few fixed blades, diamond stones, steel, ceramic rod, and electric filet knife (I love using a good sharp knife, but when it comes to a big pile of fish the electric knife takes the cake).
So when the comment arises "I'd help but didn't bring a knife" I got it covered, although I may kringe watching how some use it. ;-)
I have learned to make any tool work for the job at hand, but its enjoyable when you have the right tools for the job.

PR Funny you mentioned wanting a handle to extend past your pinkie on some knives I like that where your pinkie wrests in that hook but I don't like a huge handle and would rather it be smaller most of the time, it just feels like I can be more agile with it.

The fixed blade definitely cleans easier than the folder, and I hate putting a folder back in my pocket that's not completely dry.

As far as next to the mouse, well I have a roller ball (don't like chasing a mouse around the desk) but next to it is a 110,532,500 and a few 501's.

I like the 112, but for dressing a deer, I'll stick with the 110. The 119 is just bigger than I want to carry around, and gives me less carry options. Not to mention I like the nostalgia of the 110, since I've been using one for deer hunting since I was a kid.
