110 price vs 112

The Buck 110 is for sale everywhere, especially in the big box stores (both general line and outdoors) - it is a price point knife that seems to be the lost leader for Buck. The Buck 112 is normally only seen at specialty stores that cater to discerning knife customers - smaller volume. OH

You really don't see a 112 for sale at big box stores.
In fact I can't remember the last time I seen one in any store.

Yep. Volume. There may be one line of machines making 110's all year round. 112's might get started and stopped on a line that makes other knives. The 110 line may have more automation. So the 110 may actually cost less to make. I'd hope Buck doesn't lose money on the 110 but they may accept much lower margins. It is the drug of entry for all the people who move on to collecting dozens of 112's and custom 110's and who knows what else.

It's crazy to think that a 112, 55, 501, and other knives would cost more than a 110 though smaller and using the same materials in smaller quantities.
I always figured though that it's because the 110 sells in such a high volume.
The 110 and 119 special are the highest selling Buck models so it does make a bit of sense that they cost less than others.

I always thought it was to offset the cost of the sheath. The standard 110 comes with a nylon sheath. The 112 has always come with a leather one. I've noticed even on Buck's website it does not give you the option to order a custom 112 with nylon sheath, but the custom 110 does.

I have three 110s they all came with leather sheaths. I have four 112s they all came with nylon sheaths.

O. B.

Where'd you buy your 112's? I've got a lot of 112's and never had one come with a nylon sheath. The only nylon sheath that I own that fits it, if I recall was from a Cabela's edition 482 which I purchased a few years ago. Even on Buck's website if you do a search for 112, the nylon sheath is labeled for a "112 Ecolite", which I assume means the 482, 422, and upcoming 112 ecolite.

I’ve asked myself this question for years. More philosophically than economically

The world's largest retailer get leather now instead of nylon. As well as a higher price.

That sheath will work for the 112 as well. Ecolite was paperstone handles and the same size as the 112 as are the 422 and 442. The 482 is slightly narrower and comes with a clip that is riveted on.
