110, Well Used and Abused

My brother gave me this 110. It's been well used and his EDC for the past several years. The date code is from 2001 and I think he got it from Cabela's. It's got the gold colored blade, what's left of it, that is only sharpened on one side. Is this blade what I hear referred to as the Buckcote? Anyone have any insight, comments, on this coating.

As you can see, the tip of the blade is broken...:(... I was going to regrind it but am afraid I won't do it justice. If I send it back to Buck will they put a new blade in it for me? Since it was obviously abused I would expect to pay for the blade replacement.

Take a look, gonna give thumbnails a try.......

Mike

I really like the look of a well-used knife, and in fact have looked on ebay for beat up 110s. Recently bought an user Case Sodbuster (large) because I liked the patina on the blade that had obviously seen a bunch of action.

If your 110 were mine, I would probably get a new blade for it, even though you can get a new 110 at Walmart for a paltry $30. If you do send it to Buck, you may wish to make sure first that they will return the same knife to you instead of just sending you a new one.

YES, Buck is bad about returning a BRAND NEW knife to you :D. One time I sent in a two dot 112 for cleaning. They sent me a new one in place of it. I really liked the new 112, but I wanted my older 112 w/ 440C steel back. I called and left a message w/ Joe and someone called me back within an hour. My knife was back to me before I could get the replaced knife back in the mail to them.

If it was me, I would just retip the knife myself. I am not sure if Buck still can replace the "gold blade".

The past month, the wife and I have been digging for gold in a few states. While in GA, a fellow miner had a few knives for sell. All were cheap china made knives you see at flea markets, but among all the cheapies there was an old four dot 110. It looked to be in pretty bad condition with what looked to be pitting in the brass on one side. The tip had been broken off. I bought it and brought it home for some TLC. After some time cleaning it up and time on a few stones, it does not look half bad.

I like to find knives like this because I am not afraid to work on them. It allows me to do some mods to the knife if I wanted. I have been thinking of adding some deep finger grooves to the latest 110 I have "rescued". Maybe I will try my hand at engraving???

Best of luck to you what ever you do with your new knife.

powernoodle and John,

Thanks for the comments. I don't want a new one to replace this one. I am about to email Mr. Houser re. cleaning up my 184, I think I'll ask him what he could do, if anything, for this 110.

Digging for gold, brings back memories. I used to live in S.E. Alaska, near Juneau. There was a creek, Montana Creek, that flowed through the valley where I lived. The creek was named after Montana Bill who lived in a small cabin alongside the creek. I spent many hours panning and sluicing the creek and others in the area. I wasn't a very successful prospector but it was great fun. Hunting for gold is a lot like hunting down my next Buck knife, I'm having a blast.

Modding this knife could be a great idea. I read the thread on 334dave's mod of a 110, I think he dubbed it the Rubber Bucky. He put rubber scales on it. I have thought that might be a fun thing to do. (Yeah, Dave, I may steal your idea.....:)....) The scales on this 110 are in such good shape I might have to find another in worse shape to mess with.

They would most likely replace the blade if they had 'em. But, I'm thinking they may not have any of those Buckcote blades as it's been some time since they were being made.
Stranger things have happened and ya nver know what is laying around, so I would contact Joe Houser at Buck.

Those knives are wicked sharp. I used one of my 110 BuckCote knives for months but finally stopped using it.

Here's a pic of one and a 192 BuckCote that shows off the golden hue better.

Buckaholic, I sent off an email to Joe Houser. I would be fine with a standard blade in the knife, if that's all they have available.

Your pics show the gold much better than mine did. Can I ask where you got the thumb stud on the 110 in bottom picture? I've seen several pics posted lately with studs, are they an after-market item?

It's called a One Arm Bandit, I just had to hunt one down for my Buck 560. It was harder to find than I thought it would be, but I did find a place that had some still and they go it to me real fast.

Thanks for the link BCCL, I'm gonna call my order in tomorrow. Lot's of nice looking Bucks on that site....

I agree, A well used looking knife is a good look. (as long as the blade is in good shape!) It Means its being used for what it was meant for!!

There were four colors of that buckcoat or ion fuson -
Black, indigo aka purple , champagne aka light gold , gold aka dark gold..
All are a titanium nitrate coating that was put on by a company close to the cal plant.
as it has a high rockwell number..it can chip, some swear by it some don’t..
I have 4 diff year marks - one each for the dark colors I know of and the light gold has two year marks I know of and the dark gold has at least 3 likely more. I believe gold was last used in a 560 framed knife in 2001 …
A set of all four colors is impressive and not often seen together..
any one here got all four? picts would be nice...
