110 with non matching scales

I have searched for info on this knife to no avail so I thought I'd ask the experts.
This knife belonged to my grandfather who sold buck knives at his hardware store for many years.
When he passed I had the honor of receiving many of his knives. Among them was this 110 folder with non matching scales.
My guess was that it was a display model of available woods? But it's just a guess.
Best I can tell it was made pre-1986? It is marked BUCK. 110 U.S.A.
Thanks,

Pre-86... It's a 72. Yet, I don't know why the handles were done in that manner. DM

Your grandfather might have actually picked that knife out because of the difference in appearance of the scales. I have a few like that in my collection where the Macassar Ebony scales are that different from each other.

Your knife was born approximately in 1973. Good solid knife.

Looking at an enlargement of the right scale I've got a feeling you grandpa was handy......

Look at the pile side scale of this 110 that I gave my son in the third photo down in this thread; http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/980567-My-Son-s-42nd-Birthday-Present

That two tone scale is one solid piece of Macassar Ebony. I liked it well enough to clean the knife up and give to my son for his birthday.

That photo should show you why your grandpa's knife looks like that. I think it's a desirable trait in the Macassar Ebony because it's rather rare to see one with that much difference.

Thanks for all of the info !
Too bad it isn't a 1971, would've been cool if it was born the same year as me.
Stumps that is a beautiful restoration! I may just have to start polishing this one.
Thanks again,
Chris
