Can anyone tell me if these 110's are dyed birchwood scales?

The first is a 2005 charcoal with nickle silver, box number B110-SP59-0 and the second the 40th anniversary green, box number B110-SP70-0.

Thanks for you help.

Believe I read somewhere here about a month or two ago that the French Green is birch.
As for the SP59, I think that may be veneer. Ebony or obeechee?
But I've been wrong twice before...2 ex's to prove it.

Guess it's a school night as it's quiet here. Not even many looky-loo lurkers.
Hope someone else chimes in to set the record straight...esp on the SP59 as I have one like it:

Hey Goose,
Thanks for the reply. Nice Knife.

I wondered if they were both dyed birch as the charcoal looks the same as photos I've seen of the Charcoal Alpha Dorado which is advertised as birchwood and I think the Dorado was the same year as my 110. Thought they may have used the same timber on both.
Also looking closely at the 2 I put up, other than the color the timber looks exactly the same, a pity the photo doesn't show it so well.

Hey JollyJumBuck...
Thanks. Your kinves look knice too. I like that green one except for it being called "french "green (don't get me started). The badge insert I'm still not decided on. It reminds me of some kind of 50's/coldwar era political badge from eastern europe. Having said that, it is still something a collector has to have if he can get one.
I'll get off my ass and check the tang stamp on this one below.
This actually looks "charcoal". It's grey.
I don't have an AD to compare it to as I only collect 110 knives...but does your AD look like this?

I have to admit taht I have heard several stories on that wood. Laminated birch, laminated Obeechee, laminated something. I will talk to the engineers and get the straight skinny. I do know that it is laminated something. They use dyes and whatnot to simulate diferent types of wood. I can say another thing for sure, the stuff is very strong and takes a nice shine!

JollyJumBuck...
Here is a pic of some random woody's around my desk. Took them out for sunbathing as I thought maybe the contrast in the wood would show better.
The top one, I think, is the same finish as the knife you have in question and the second from the top (2001 B110-SP30-0) is the one that I think is more "charcoal".
BTW, someone with access to SP runs for 2001...can you reply and let me know how many and who ordered the B110-SP30-0?
Anyway, just thought I'd throw this out for your review.

I only collect 110s also so was just going on a photo I saw of the Dorado. Here is a pic of my charcoal which hopefully shows it a bit better. The wood or laminate just looks dyed to me, the color doesn't look natural such as the ebony or obechee.

The badge on the green does look a little political but there is something about it I like.

Thanks for looking into it Joe, whatever it turnns out to be I'm still a proud owner, I love my 110's.

Thanks for the kind comments and jolly good 110 collection ya got Jolly.
How easy are you able to get Buck knives over in Australia? Wondering if it is like the UK...seems like a hassle for Maverick (he seems MIA lately BTW).

BTW, your one pic of the of the charcoal does show what ya mean better. It is definitely diff than the 110I have.
Here is a 403 that is birch:

It' too addictive and yes expensive but I'm loving it.

I'm learning quite a lot about Buck Knives from this forum thanks to you guys, I've also been reading through the old threads which is interesting.

110's here in Aus are about 2 to 3 times dearer than in the US and you can only get the standard one so I import from the US which is not bad postage costs (depending on the seller) and there is no import fees etc for anything valued under $1000- AU. Customs also have no problem with the 110's coming into the country.
