Any advice regarding the carrying of one of these in NYC? The Rucksack is the one I received in a trade. Has a 3.5 inch locking blade that seems extremely difficult if not impossible to flick open. Also has a saw, bottle, can opener, awl and corkscrew. I work occasionally in the city, and would actually use the saw while working. In the event I'm searched by law enforcement, assuming I am not violating any laws, would this knife be otherwise legal and safe to possess in NYC? Thanks

I used to live in NY, and always thought that the length limit was 3" in the city itself. The fellows on the forum can give some clarification, but I asked a similar question about some Queen liner locks that I have. Even the hulk couldn't open one of them one-handed. The reply I got was use a slippy. I am curious to hear what people say to your inquiry.

NYC length restriction is that the blade must be less than 4".

Gravity knife definition includes that it must lock open. If your SAK does not lock, it wouldn't matter if the pivot was so loose that the blade fell open.

Remove the pocket clip, if any, to eliminate any possibility of clipping it to your pocket or belt where it would be visible to LEOs. Keep it deep in your pocket and you should not have any problems.

I live in NYC and carry a knife on a daily basis. As far as I know blade must be under 4".
It also seems to be that the pocket clip is being used for an excuse to search you.
It it has a pocket clip remove it and you should be fine.

By definition, you are fine. Blade length less than 4in, no clip to possibly get you in trouble, and I never could get mine to open one handed either. And I really tested it.

BUT.....(You knew it was coming right). If I had to do it over, I would carry the Vic Camper instead. All the same tools but no lock. I love the Vic 111mm series. I have several and have EDCed a Ruck or a Hunter since 91. But in today's climate, slippies come with my on my trips to "the city".

He is completely right. By definition if a knife locks open you it can be defined as a gravity knife. Although your blade is hard to flick open, I've personally seen a leo flick open a folder by holding the blade & flicking it because the handle is much heavier it opened. FYI any knife can be considered a dangerous knife if you make any statement as to I carry it for personal defense. That implies intent to use against another unlawfully. I carry a fixed blade under 4" for work & keep it concealed. I also keep a copy of NYC knife carry law in my wallet. Today I'm carring an Esee-3 mil clip point

Not to hijack this thread but couldn't that ESEE-3 Mil Clip point be considered a "dagger, dirk, or dangerous weapon" and get you into just as much trouble as a "gravity" knife? I agree that it should technically be fine (I own a regular RC-3 myself) but I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes an issue.

Unfortunate to say, but I feel that in NYC any Leo could arrest you for any Knife. Its a fixed blade under 4", I only carry it to work. I don't carry any knife at all if i'm not in my work clothes. I drive a vehicle for work & the glass breaker pommel could come in handy god forbid I get into an accident.

The only advantage that a folder has over a fixed blade is concealability, which is very important in anti-knife jurisdictions like NYC and Boston. A fixed blade requires a sheath and is longer in overall length than a closed folder. It also has a tendency to "print" more, unless you are wearing an outer garment (coat, jacket, vest, etc.) or a loose-fitting, untucked shirt.
