Hi everyone, so I'm getting ready to purchase a Ranger for pocket carry, and I have some questions.
Is there anywhere that sells this model in S30v or only custom shop?
Are the finger grooves comfortable?
Which handle material is best for edc?
Will it stand up to some hard use? Thanks!

jday, the Custom Shop and Limited Editions are about the way you can get a S30V blade on a 112. Stand up to hard use... Slapping limbs and malleting with it I can't answer as I don't do that. But hard cutting. i.e. pushing it through bones or sheet rock. I have done and it does stand up to this. Finger grooves are comfortable. Doing hard cutting like that I like micarta for the handle. I've not carried mine in my pocket. Some on here do. I have one with S30V steel and it is a good steel. DM

I have pocket carried a 112 for many years. Never thought much about it. But i think it depends on the person. Have you ever carried a larger knife in your pockets? I think it is about the perfect size knife for me. I can not speak for the S30V steel. My 112 is a 1988 model and has done every thing I ever ask of her.

Some folks sew a separate pocket in the existing front or back pocket, so the knife stays upright. Just a thought in case the 112 bothers you when it falls sideways. A few examples...

TAH that's a genius idea. Surprised no one has marketed or manufactured jeans like that before. I'd buy 2-3 pair with different pocket sizes for different edc blades.

jday, the 112 is my all time favorite knife.for pocket carry I like the insider pocket slip.It has a magnetic flap that secures it to your pocket.

It holds the knife vertical in your pocket and I find it very comfortable.

Fingergrooves are a matter of personal preferance some like them and some don't.

Enjoy your 112

Love that Millie! Just like mine.

I have sewn pockets inside nearly all of the right front pockets of my dress/suit pants just for the purpose of of carrying in a knife and not having it show.

I think the 112 is the most beautiful Buck ever.

I find the 112 (and the 112 Ecolite) too wide for comfortable front pocket carry.

For front pocket carry in that size, I very much prefer the 500 Duke. I think the 112 is prettier but carry the 500 way more often.

I moved to rear pocket carry this past year (one of the pictures above is mine). The 112 carries nicely in the rear pocket vertically but at that point, it's just as easy to carry a 110 which fits my hand and uses better, so again, the 110 gets carried more than my 112.

If "hard use" means cutting abrasive materials, you might prefer the more carbide rich S30V. I like 420HC for EDC just fine.

If the cost is prohibitive, 112s show up on the second hand market at reasonable prices and a stock 112 isn't that much. Might be worth starting with a lower end one to see if the width and weight work for you in the pocket before shelling for a custom shop version.

Is the 500 still made? Do you have any comparison pics of the three, and any other similar knives like the 501?

To my knowledge, the 500 is back in regular production.

Top to bottom: 110, 112, 500, Bucklite Max Medium (forget the model number).

Note, that is an older 500 shown and the blade shape on current models probably has a bit more belly (which is good).

Thank you! How does the 501 stack up to these?

Others can provide side-by-each photos involving the 501 but I will say that the 501 is a significant change in size - much more than the blade length alone suggests.

I think of the 110, 112, and 500 as "real" single blade lock backs. They all give me a full 4 finger hold, or at least real close to that. The 112 is the smallest feeling, due the crowding of the front bolster.

I think of 501 as a small pocket knife that just happens to be a lockback. I find lockbacks in that size range to be more comparable to most slip joint pocket knives in size and feel. They make great office carries if you can give up on the need to spread peanut butter, if that makes any sense. I've given more 501s as gifts to non-knife people than 110s.

Alright, that rules out the 501! I have one more question: if I do a custom shop in S30v, will that still be covered by the $10 blade replacement? Will the new blade still be S30v?

They will replace the original blade with the same blade type. No upgrades, no downgrades. I assume the cost would still be the same. I've not heard of them doing otherwise. At least in the last several years anyway.

Ecolites anyone?
