Does anyone have or know of a dateline for 119 variations? I have been offered a supposed barrel nut but can't get the person to text me a picture of the pummel to tell for sure and I'm not parting with the amount of coin without knowing for sure. Also, is there a way to tell without seeing the pummel end? One side has no pin "mark" but the other has a faint one.

On a barrel nut configuted pommel knife there won't be pins in the sides at all. The only way to varify that its a barrel nut knife is to see the pea sized barrel nut in the rear of the pommel, Hear is a picture of a barrel nut and this is the only thing you'll see. They can be very hard to find but generally they are in the same area, at the top center of the pommel, like mine.

As far as te date line goes, I don't see how that will help your deal. The dates of most factory fixed blades are the same.

1961-1962/63 Leather Spacer barrel nut configuration
1963 hard Fiber barrel nut configuration
1963-1966 Single line
1967 BUCK* blade stamp
1967-1969 Buck USA with Hard fiber spacers
1996-1971 BUCK USA with micarta spacers
19672 BUCK 119 USA (Inverted, blade pointed down)
1973-1980 BUCK 119 USA, 4 micarta handle spacers (reverted, blade pointed up)
1981 early BUCK 119 USA, 3 Micarta handle spacers
1981 late to 1985, BUCK 119 USA, 2 Micarta handle spacers

Some may slightly disagree but its as close as one can get without fighting.

It can get difficult, they are sometimes difficult to see. There is a rare variation when Buck first started pinning the pommels and used up the remaining barrel nut pommels...pinning thru the side and plugging the hole in the rear. Buck has also been known to "save" a pommel that had a casting blemish by plugging the defect...I have seen pictures of pommels with two apparent pins...the second one is really a defect plug....I guess it's possible this could have been done on a barrel nut pommel also. Hey, I read this stuff on the internet so it must be true...

But the chances of running into one of those is slim to none. I didn't want to mention all the possibilities because that would just confuse the situation. There are oddities that have occured, and thats all those were. Those were never in the dateline. Hell if we were to ramble off all the oddities we have seen over the years we would have a whole new thread.
