Lately I've acquired a couple 119's, one of which is in the "user" category. I've been thinking about taking off the top guard. Holding the knife and sort of hiding it with my thumb really changes the character of the knife and I kind of like it. Has anyone ever done this and would they be willing to post some pic's?

removeing the top guard can harm the structural integrity
have seen were the beak of the pomal has been removed
is a ncie effect..

I don't see how shortening the top would weaken the knife structurally, the part projecting in space is not supporting anything? I wouldn't remove it below the level of the handle, which would still leave about .18" of material above the tang hole...

Me neither...Even taking the pommel & grip off and removing the guard shouldn't weaken anything...

Then you could put an M9 grip, lug, and guard on it... :D

(With a little work, of course) ;)

I don't see how anything of any significance is weakened by doing this.

Thanks. I did it several months ago, as I found the guard to be annoying. I ground it off with a 60 grit belt on the belt sander, smoothed it out with a 180, and then buffed with a cloth wheel, tripoli then rouge. Looked fantastic, like it could have come from the factory. The bakelite handle buffs out easily, too.

It's all gotten ugly since then, as it all gets scratched up as easily as it buffs. But it isn't a difficult mod.

Whoa, that's it right there alright. Well done shecky, and thanks for posting.

One thing to keep in mind when you buff the phenolic. If you get it too hot, it will burn. Usually the burn isn't very deep and can be removed with abrasive, then a little less pressure with the buffer.
I would think that if you wrapped the handle with cloth tape, I am thinking of the camo tape I use on my shot gun, that would help give the knife more grip.

Nice mod Shecky!
I've been tempted to do that to my 119 as well.
Plus maybe grind off (or at least round off) the swedge/false edge.
I used my 119 to do some detailed carving once, i choked right up on the end of the blade and the swedge gave me a blister on my thumb and forefinger.
Wouldn't be the first time i modded a knife.
Modded my 124 Frontiersman long ago.
Rounded the grip, removed the top guard, reprofiled the grind as well.

Shecky,

Very nice looking job on the 119! I really like the looks of that.

Also, ditto what David said Oliver...I'd really like to see your 124 mod too.

This is an older pic.
I need to buff/polish the 124 some.
Maybe bring it back to a nice shine.
Bought a cheapy belt sander a while back so i may just do that, lol.
