12” sirupate and baak progress pics

Looking good! Yes unfortunately the brown leather we have for traditional daps is quite a bright, milk chocolatey colour. I've not seen it look quite as orange as this before but it may be the lighting. I'll have a chat with the team about it :)

Yep, had a chat with the team about the colour and they've confirmed that it's the same brown leather we've been using the whole time. I have not beena fan of it historically- potentially at some point in the next year we can get an order in direct with the factory and arrange a brown that's closer to the western leather :)

That would be nice. I guess i never looked at a brown dap sheath from you all, i would have gone with the black instead. Pictures of the color options might be a good idea. It’s ok though. I’ll try and darken it up with some mink oil.

Just got them in yesterday!
I love them.
I am wondering if i should have gone with the large handle option instead of the medium though. Maybe i’m holding it wrong, but the flare at the end bites my hand when swinging it. I am holding it with the handle ring between my ring and middle finger. If i switch to having the ring between my ring finger and pinky, my hand ends up on the bolster and my thumb settles on the downward slope of the bolster. Maybe that is the correct way?

Glad you're liking them! That's the right way of holding it- is it the actual point of the flare biting into your hand or just the ridge that leads up to it? Are you holding it in a tight perpendicular hammer grip? Or an angled grip?

It is the actual point. I should have clarified also that it is the top point (the ine on the same side as the spine of the blade. I believe i am using a hammer grip but will take a look to confirm in a bit.

Based on this info then your hand could be a bit big for it yeah. Do you have particularly meaty palms?
In use try to hold it pinched between index and thumb like youre making an "OK" sign. When you chop you are kind of squeezing with your pinky and ring finger to accelerate the rotation of the blade into a snap cut. There shouldn't be a need to death grip it though- the flare should act as passive retention and keep the blade in your hand with only gentle pressure

Not really. I wear a size medium glove and most 4 inch handles i can get a full 4 finger grip.
The extra rotation of the snap cut is where it really digs in. I’ll play around with the grip and hopefully be able to find something that works. I really do love the Khukuri.

I'm certain you'll be able to get it sorted out. Feel free to DM some pics in hand and I'll be able to advise in more detail for you :)

Does it start to dig from the start or after a few sings after it drifts in the hand a bit? The Siru in my very first order fits my hand like an absolute glove.

I have an array of handle sizes in my collection of HI and Kailash khukuri and each one needs something a little different in how I hold it, not to mention how much I let my wrist tilt.

On a handle design note: what I've noticed with all my blades is that handle length isn't everything. The radii of either side of the flare being too large or small actually matters quite a lot in helping keep a hand locked in the right position between the flare and ring. Too small a radius (more pronounced flare) and the hand is allowed to slip down to a more pointed cap whereas a larger radius (more gradual flare) would help stop that drift and soften the shape of the flare. However, the downside of option two is that if there isn't enough flare, then you tend to drift more and I've got blades at both ends of that spectrum. It's an unfortunate balancing act for the smiths and with no great way to get a tailored fit to suit people's hands. I could also spout of about handle ring profiles but maybe some other time.

My recent order where I got a shorter handle Pensioner because I found the long handle to be too long, has a more pronounced flare (small radius) with a more pointed cap that had a bit of the same issue you describe at first. After a while of using and just swinging it about to get a feel for it, the issue has gone away. I tend to squeeze more with my middle finger than my index finger in the "OK" hold but that's just me.
