Forged this one and ground it yesterday, 12.5" from the choil to tip after grinding, from 80CRV2.

This was right off the anvil, no grinding, just hand hammers.

Here's a close up of the plunge area, real happy with how it turned out.

Rough ground, need to normalize again before finishing the grind for heat treat.

After heat treat I'll grind the bevels up to remove most of the forging marks along the spine. The ricasso will retain forge finish.

I'm doing a stainless guard, single stainless pin, and most likely an ebony handle, with a domed stainless butt cap. Subject to change obviously, wild hairs being what they are.

Criticism is welcome, this is the best I'm capable of right now and I'm always trying to improve.

Nice work. Forging looks very good. I would try to leave some of the hammer marks along the spine when you finish grind. I wouldn't take much more off for the finish personally.
Keep up the good work:thumbup:

Darcy:)

My goal is to get the edge down pretty thin (not quite a zero grind) and try to leave around 1/8"+ of forge marks along the spine.

I'm trying to strike a balance between the rustic forge finish and a polished and refined knife.

Thanks for the kind words!

Be careful going too thin at the edge. Long blades have so much more cutting power that you can over stress the edge pretty easy if you do any chopping with it. Don't ask me how I know:rolleyes:

Sketched out the rest of the knife. Couldn't figure out how I wanted it all so I got some huge construction paper that was hanging out on my coffee table for some reason and sketched until I liked what I saw.

The guard will be stainless, polished and buffed. Handle will be either ebony or Blackwood, also polished and buffed with a single stainless pin.

Did a rough cut with a file to set the tang and square the ricasso shoulders for the guard.

I'm changing to Park's 50 for quench oil next month, and I've seen some folks get a hamon from this steel, so I'm going to see if I can pull one from it.

The sheath I'm gonna do with a single nickel silver Sam Browne stud, dyed dark brown with a black stingray inlay, and a simple border stamp inside the stitching.

That's all for now. Should be making the guard for it this week along with the other pair of bowies I have in progress.

Looking good. The sketching of the finished knife looks good.
