Hey guys, Im looking at getting a HI Kukri. I have on the way an AK chopper from a trade but eventually I want to get a kukri. I like the 12 in. Ang Khola, mostly because of the price point. Is a smaller kukri a viable option? or should I spring for a full size. Thanks! -caleb

Welcome cfoster2003!,

The 12 inch Ang Kholas are amazing choppers for their small size, they punch way above their class.
That being said, a 12 inch khukuri is only going to have 7 or 8 inches of blade. H.I. khukuri are measured in overall length.
I would suggest going with (at least) a 15 inch Ang khola if you want to do any kind of serious chopping.

Please take time to peruse our "Link Library" at the top of the forum and be sure to read the "Safety Thread" !

Thanks so much for the info! I am starting to realize that this forum is top notch! I will check out that info. Thanks again

Only here is a knife with a 8" long, 3/8" thick blade considered little. The 12 inchers won't chop like the 15s. But they will make a Ka-Bar or Buck Special look like a toy. If you have big mitts the 12" may be too small. But if you're going to be hiking far and counting ounces I would give a serious look at the little guys. For heavy duty chopping I like the larger WWII (but it's a beast to carry all day long). There is a reason the 15" AK is the #1 best seller. Short enough to pack, heavy enough to chop. My wife claimed my 15" AK. Oh, and welcome.

Frank

Karda is correct. Read the safety thread. Hold the khukuri in your hand then read the safety thread again. They are big heavy blades and can do a great deal of damage.

Thanks guys, I have relatively small hands. I am giving some considerable thought to the 12". I am looking for more of a utility knife I can carry long distances. Thanks again

Welcome:)

The 12-13" AK makes a great camp knife. It has enough heft to split kindling yet nimble enough to do lighter tasks. I really like them as a hiking knife.

hmmmmm...

who'da thought?

:)

btw the villager model 12 usually has a longer handle.

I've been playing with an 18 ounce 18 inch sirupati alot and I have to say, as a camping knife it might come in handy for clearing branches and brush while at the same time saving you energy. The blade is light and quick to swing and has taken it's spot as my machete replacement. I have yet to chop down anything thicker than a two inch round but I'm sure when camping, chopping down a huge tree trunk into halves wouldn't occur too often. It probably could although the bite might not be as deep as a GRS or M43. I have a 15 inch ak I keep in a go bag but outside of the whack tests I have not put it to much field use. It seems capable though.

cfoster, I would really consider the 15", I think you will be happier in the end with it. The handle is not that much bigger IMHO. To be honest, once you buy one your going to be hooked anyway and will be looking for more:D. Either way you go enjoy and be safe.

I appreciate all of your input. Im still undecided as of right now. Im saving my pennies. When I order one do I wait while its made or do they have them all ready to go? I know Im getting hooked. :)

Generally Auntie will have store items in stock, but at times may be sold out and between shipments. She will let you know if an item you request is unavailable. Items sold here in the forum are in stock.
Either way you usually get your item in about 3-4 days time in the CONUS.

Cfoster, I have small hands as well, and love my 12" khuk. Send Auntie Yangdu an email to see if she has one in stock. A 15" might chop better, but the 12" is still great.

I have, er, several HI khukuris, but the 12" villager AK is the only model that I feel the need to have two of. (OK, it's not the only model I have two of, just the only one I need to have two): one to keep in the Jeep, and one for around the house and yard. Other and bigger models have their own attractions and uses, but the 12" AK is a really useful and versatile little workhorse.

Awesome guys! I keep swaying back and forth...lol. Im sure eventually I will own both. I think I will start with the 12. I have an AK bowie on the way (should get here tomorrow) got it in a trade. It will be a little bit before I get the 100 for the 12 in. My birthday is Sept. 2 so thats probably when I will have the money. If anyone has any more info please send it my way. I am hooked on HI, I know that! Thanks

Yangdu will post a deal of the day (DOTD). Variety of kuks. Today's (8/3) was a Mongolian mini sword. If you see something you like, email her and she will send you the paypal info.

A lot of us circle the waters for the DOTDs, and when one gets it, one 'sharks' the kukri... which makes Karda's avatar very appropriate ;)

You can also try your luck in the Knife Exchange here on Bladeforums. There's a sale section and a trade section.
