12 inch siru, chit?

These, especially if they've got a nice sweeping line, have always appealed - but they look too small to chop, and I've wondered if perhaps they're less useful for general purposes than a straight blade in this length. I'm not looking for a weapon, but for a useful tool. But the beauty of a well put-together small chit or siru calls pretty persuasively.

What do you folks think? Do small sirus and small chits deserve a place among my bundle of user knives?

Well I really like the 12" siru. I've never handled a chit other than the little 9" bilton type. The 12" siru is a knife in khuk's clothing, IMHO. I've often said that I wouldn't chop anything with it that I wouldn't chop with a Ka-Bar. It's stout and can handle anything you through at it prying wise, unlike the Ka-Bar. However, it doesn't have the umph of a 15" khuk. It doesn't even have close to the umph of a 12" AK, even a thin one.
The little siru makes a great hiking knife. It's fairly small, thick enough to batton through stuff, and when honed to a razor's edge it'll do much of the smaller tasks with ease. I've got one that needs a BIG time clean up done on it. It fell out of my bag during a canoe trip and sat at the bottom of the boat covered in water all day. It's pretty rough lookin' right now. But, a little CLR soak and bit of sand paper, it ought to be out in the field in no time;)

I do own 12" AK and chit. I'd like the usefulness of the AK better, but that chit does look nice !

I have a 10.5" Sgt Khadka and a 12" Badune Special. Both are beauties. The Khadka is heavier, but the Badune has a wider belly. The handles on these small knives is so small I don't know if I'd really use them much. I'm thinking of making a sheath for the Khadka though. It really is a beauty.

I have a 15" Bura special just like yours.Bigger handle. Curves beautifully like a hanshee. :)

You beat me to the Badune.

Don't know about all that, looks to me like Jake's already got it pretty well covered. :D

Tom, if you're into "low impact" camping/backpacking, a 12" siru will handle most of the chores you'll run into. But, so would a Leukku or other large fixed blade that falls into the "Camp knife" category, it really becomes a matter of your personal preference and what works for you.

I woodchucked the handle, and it shines like a bike reflector. Happy to save you that chore Astro!;)

No expert here, just a user/practical application for me alone commentor.

I have a PK, but carry the 12in AK @ 12oz. It is a villager model.

I was recently sent a BEAUTIFUL Sgt. Kharka 12in BAS, 11oz by a terrific guy. (Way too pretty for me to use and I'm trying to figure out a way to turn it into money for Ram.)

The length and weight numbers are almost identical to the 12in AK, but the BAS has a traditional bolster. Both have steel fittings.

But Jake pretty much nailed it. You are well equipped with any of these and thus, it comes down to your personal taste. Sirus always looked like knives to me and I like the point on the AK more than the PK.

YMMV.

Be well and safe.
