Am I correct in thinking 14” contact wheel will give noticeably less of a hollow grind than a 12” wheel in small, thin folder blades?
I’m currently using a 12” wheel and really like the finish it leaves, I just want a less hollow grind.
Thanks

Yes, the larger the diameter the shallower the hollow grind.

You can make curves (or circles) in say powerpoint with 6" and 7" radii.
Compare how they project onto the height of blade that you are using (likely less than 1").
My guess is that if the 12" wheel is too tight for your taste, then 14" won't be different enough.

Yes, a 14" wheel will make a wider hollow grind. However, it isn't going to be vastly different from a 12" blade The difference is about 15%.

I have a 20" grinder being made for me right now. I wanted to go minimum hollow / maximum wheel using standard belts. I have only been flat grinding so far, but can see some advantages in a shallow hollow grind. Plus I look forward to grinding with a wheel instead of on a platen, heat build up and belt life should be a little better..

To the grind? A little more slicey/less friction, yet strong. A little bit lighter blade. A little less material BTE as the knife wears and you sharpen.
But the main reason I am getting this machine is that it just makes more sense to me, to grind of a wheel than a platen.
Also, it feels very awesome to have that big wheel in the shop and I severely enjoy buing new tools & machinery.

after using the 4 foot platen i really feel the need for a 36-40 inch wheel in the shop i just dont have the time or space to put one yet

look for your self .........this is Nakiri knife i work on , 2 inch wide and 3mm on spine , hollow only one side on 17 inch wheel .......
Bad picture but it can be seen

But what i really like on wheels is fast grinding ..............this nakiri was grind from 11mm thick steel :D
