12" Ube?

First, let me say I absolutely love the UBE - though i don't have one...yet. The only problem, if you can really call it a problem, is the length. 18" is one heck of a chopping behemoth. I've already got a 15"BAS that i absolutely love to death, and has been used for a very many random tasks. I cannot imagine carrying around something bigger.

And as said, i love the UBE. I'm wondering if anyone else has thought of the possibility of a smaller model - 9"-12" that makes it less of a chopper, and more of a general purpose knife.

Ideas and thoughts?

The ten inch blade is probably the most comfortable for the majority of us, the weight is such that one could use the knife for extended periods without suffering too much fatigue. If you venture too much longer and have a mass increase, things tend to get tricky for all day use. In a Khukri design, I'd go with a WW2 pattern of 9-12 inches but not much larger as a general puropse tool.

I'm talking 12" overall length.... not a 12" blade. 12" Overall length probabily gives a blade length of what.... 8, 9"?

Are you the person who brought this up previously? It is a good idea.
I'm going to write Yangdu and tell her so. Then we can hope and see what happens.
Oh, would you consider a 14", or is 12" about it?

The more I think about this....a 12" UBE might be more useful than a 12" AK, and those are reasonably popular. The upturned tip adds an advantage.

Yeah, what munk said.:D

Maybe a few prototypes and a new Baby Ube could be born. Call it the BUBE. :)

I'd buy one. That is, after I ask the Mrs.....:o

put me on the list for the first batch.:thumbup::thumbup:

BUBE is it. That's great.

It's not like the 12" AK is doing a lot of chopping. It has the mechanical leverage advantage is about it over a conventional blade. So the BUBE keeps the khuk's leverage advantage, but with the point upturned, becomes even more versatile.

I think it's a great idea. One of those that is so simple, so right, staring us in the face, and we never saw it coming. Hooray for new voices around here!

A 12" would be good, but I would prefure a 13-14" due to the handle size on most 12"

Good idea, hopefully it gets made (in any of the lengths).

I was the one that brought it up earlier Munk.... but you were the only one who replied to that thread so i decided to try again with a more blatant thread title... seemed to work.

I agree to what most have said: the upturned blade will make it more versatile than a 12"AK, which as said isn't of sufficient size for heavy chopping anyway.

And Skyler makes a great point, which is handle size. I think a 13-14" could be great. Then again, so could a 12".... a 10" is definetely getting a little small. I mean, the handle on the 15"BAS i have now is pretty much perfect size. I can't think of something with a handle alot smaller than that.

I suppose we'll just have to wait and see for what comes out from the shops....

I'm definitely in for a first or second batch... once proportions get sorted out.

OK, so we're agreed even if it were 12" you'd want an adult size handle on it.

I don't know. 14" i think is pushing it, imho. I mean, the 15" AK i have is small by khuk standards, but let's face it, it's still a bloody big knife. in my mind, the entire point of shrinking the UBE (with an adult sized handle of course) is to make something more manageable as... well, i don't want to say "belt-knife", but something you could where around camping or outdoors without people giving you *really* weird looks would be good. In that respect, i think 12" would be ideal. 13" maybe.

That said, no one is going to agree on the size, and the great thing about HI is we don't have to :) How many sizes are AK's made in now? There's no reason the UBE couldn't be made in 12", 14", 18".... and everything in between. :)

Great idea. Kamis and shop will start working on the 12 inch UBE right after Dhasain. Thank you all.

Woo Hoo!! I was looking at one of these yesterday and thinking, "if only it was a bit shorter..."...

Even though the intimidation level is off the chart with the 18"! :D
