....or finally acquiring one.
My wife and I were in 'Vegas in 2006, celebrating our 20th Wedding Anniversary. It was a great time, ie., Knife Show, Antique Firearms Show and SHOT all at the same time....busy, busy.
Ken had a 'Lottery', or whatever it was called back then, by drawing cards form a deck...I had the Jack of Hearts. It's gridlock around his table when the Jack of Hearts is called out!!! WooHoo....my heart jumped, gonna get an Onion Custom!!! Problem was that there were so many wanting in that two decks were used....and the Jack of Hearts in question had a red back....mine was blue.
Fast forward 12 1/2 years and I finally found one for sale and, after hearing from Ken, it just so happened to be the very 1st 'Unusual Hunter' ever made, a Prototype he made for Kershaw. Kershaw never put the knife into production but CRKT did when Ken started to design knives for them.
The mortised handles are held in place with dowel pins so it could be taken apart easily, they are askew as put back and Ken knew immediately what it was, he also didn't want me or anyone else to think that he'd let a knife like that leave his shop.
The CRKT is out of production but I was able to run down a NIB example to have as a set...
Since it was a Proto there was no sheath but I know a guy....Paul, are you out there buddy?
The CRKT came with a real nice pancake-style sheath, and it fits the Proto, albeit a bit loose since it's handle is Micarta instead of 'rubber', but a #1 Onion Proto deserves some new pants from Mr. Long.
