In an earlier thread I discribed a friend's knife that was thought to be a custom shop 124. However, after seeing the knife again today, I think it might be a 122 Nemo. The blade stamp reads Buck, 124, USA, the blade has approx 2" of flat style serrations, and there is a thong/laynard hole in the pommel. What I thought at first were grey dymondwood scales are black/grey Buckcarta scales attached to the full tang. It has a leather Buck late syle sheath with a buck marked snap but is not marked anywhere else on the sheath. After looking at the sheath I'm not sure its a factory sheath. Of course there is no box. I dont know if the Nemo was marked 122 or 124, but do know they came with serrated blades and laynard holes and a plastic dive sheath. This knife is in mint condition and appears to have never been used or sharpened and does not look like a 20 year old knife. I'm trying to decide if its worth $200? Any opinions?

If the knife is stamped 124 then it is a Frontiersman not a 122 Nemo. Both the 124 and the 122 followed almost the exact same path at the factory. So they shared all of the same characterics except the sheath and the tang stamp. The knife you are speaking of sounds like a 1971 124 Frontiersman if the blade is read with the tip pointed to the ground. If the knife is read with the tip pointed up you have a 1972 model. From 1967-1970 both knives were stamped Buck USA the sheath and the box being the only difference. From 1971 on the tangs were stamped with a model number. As far as value goes $200.00 sounds like a great deal. Hope this helps

i bought a brand new knife like that in 1971
it is not a nemo because it has some thing different like a hole or other ....
it was with a leather sheath so is a frontiersman
imho it is a nemo if it is 122 or has the rubber sheath..
with 124 on it it is a nemo if it has the rubber sheath..
that rubber sheath is worth 100+ ...
your knife is scarce with the gray/black micarta
yes it is worth 200 to some folks
and only 100 on others..
if you want to, collect the 124 because you like it
buy it because you want it not because some one else will pay a buck more for it!!

well i paid much less for all the ones i have..
so as a investment ... with out box ..
no it is not worth 200 to me ...
i might sell one of the two i have for 200!
and it has the correct org sheath!
i have sold better for less!

now EEE buys and has sold 124's and he is a major in thoes knives
he may pop in and put his two centivos in also..
and yes if he disagrees with me ... go with his thoughts
as i dont collect them any longer..

I seem to recall that at first we used 124 blades before giving the product its own model number of 122. The 124 never officially had a lanyard hole. Pictures would be nice to see.

my first non 110 buck was a 124 new in box with leather sheath from the navy bx for ?<29$
late 1971 and it had 124 inverted with lanyard hole and striations

as data this is hear say..
i can not prove it but i know what i bought brand new as it was a chunk of change back then..
and i still have it!

334Dave, that is exactly the knife my friend has. Mint, no box, leather sheath. I'm still trying to decide if $200 is a ok price.

I seem to recall also that the Frontiersman (124) had aluminum guards and butts with no lanyard hole and the divineg knife (122/124) all had stainless steel guards and butts. the Frontiersman also did not have serrations (at least as a standard feature).

well it is hard to find .. i have not sold one of these..
based on what i have sold and paid for others
this one should be about 150 to 160 with out the box.
box adds 60$ or more easily so if you see them sell with box for 200 not bad..
but what i say is not for you...
are you wanting it for collection satisfaction or investment..?
assume that you will never see this for sale again..
do you still want it 200$ worth ?

it could fetch more or less on ebay .. lately some stuff i see sell is inflated for some reason..

howdy Bill glad to see you stop in !
now i am some what confused,, as i was going to collect the 124/122
i did some checking in to them ...but i am discarding what i thought ..
i ask for clarification on this as
i have made statements based on other information :o and
now feel some what of the fool that spoke to soon..:foot:

so let me get this down for data

you and CJ are saying that the NEMO diving knife 122/124
had the stainless hardware and had the lanyard hole and or serrations..
and that the Frontiersman 124 had aluminum hard ware
and NO lanyard hole and was standard with out serrations

and with these annotations assume that both
nemo and frontiersman were made in 71 at the same time?
and thanks for your efforts to clear this up!:D

I have both inverted and standard 124 three liners with holes in the pommel. I also have both inverted and standard 122 three liners with holes in the pommel. We should also keep in mind that the 122 pre-dated the 124 and that 124's were sold as two liners, all with holes in the pommel. The early 124's (two liners) had a flapover sheath and used a Nemo box with a gold tag over the Nemo lable indicating a Frontiersman/124. FYI.

the main question i had was reference the stainless hard ware..
which before this i would have said was only on the point down 3 line as shown

as always it seems data can be a fickle thing
kinda like quarks with spin- surmised yet not seen ..
for the two i have ...
i KNOW with out any question when they were bought..nov of 1971
the one i can even go back and work out what day it was!

Well, the guy who has this left for vacation Saturday and my R&R is almost finished and I'll be headed back to Iraq Thursday so I decided to pass on this one for now. He is not a close friend so it was kind of hard finding him at home to look at the knife. He was kind of miffed I did'nt buy it after looking at it the second time and I forgot my camera so I did'nt feel comfortable stopping by a thrid time just to take pics. I was just trying to decide if $200 was in the ballpark for a 124. I collect Buck knives but dont concentrate on any one model and everything I have is a potential user. I did'nt like the serrations on the 124 so I think I'll get a 120 first and see if the 124 is available when I come home after my tour is finished in August.

CJ, Bill, & All the Rest,

For all of you BCCI folks I suggest you go the BCCI web site and read the DEC 06, news letter article "Model 122 and 124 by Joe Houser". Folks I would say Joe has the history on this topic laid out very clearly. I would like to here comments from all of you after you go and read this article. It will end the confusion on this topic, I consider Joe's information to be correct.

Colt,

IMHO,

With today's current economic issues $200 is to high...even for one of the Gray/black "Buckarta" micarta 124/122's. However, that said one year ago I would have said get it if it's in mint condition for that price. Today, I would not give a cent over $150 for it in mint condition....if not mint, price would need to drop. I do not have one of the gray/black's in my accumulation of 10 124's, they are a very nice variation of the 122/124. In the end Colt only you can decide what you are willing to pay for a knife...not us;). Keep your head down in the sandbox and stay safe!

Thanks. If the 124 is a little overpriced it will be here when I get back in two months. I've already bought a S&W 66 PC Carry Comp and a Marlin 1894 357 mag and about $100
in ammo since Ive been home and my wife is cutting off my spending money. If I spend another $200 on a knife she may cut me off from something else......

Well, I had typed a long explanation, outlining both the 122 and 124. Had a lot of info in there, as well as some great zingers for Dave. Then I hit spell check and it deleted my entire post!!!:grumpy:
So now that I am in a grumpy mood...heres the short version, JB is right...read my data sheet. Mostly, my 2 esteemed colleges need to read it, everyone else seems to be up to speed...;)
By the way, I know there are spelling errors on this page, I'm just not hitting the spell check again!

Hey, I thought we all had spell check dispensation because of 334.
I hope I r write...
