1221 tang query

Picked up this 1221 with grey powdercoated blade(440A),and noticed this.
Looks to have the wider tang which is later used in the D2 Extreme,1281.
In Mr Walker's book on this knife it states the tang is the same as the 1217,so I assumed ALL the 1221 models would be this way,not so it seems!
My original 1221 with 12c27 blade has the narrow tang.
Why the change?
Pity they couldn't keep the 12c27 AND have the wider tang!
