If it's already high-polished, some Flitz or Simichrome metal polish will clean most stains away, and leave the shine as good or better. Use a soft & clean rag with the polish; if the rag is dirty, that alone might leave unwanted scratches.
Before trying the above, you might just try some Windex, Goo-Gone, mineral spirits, WD-40 or rubbing alcohol. If the material is organic, at least one of those should loosen it up. Might let it soak a bit first; moisten a paper towel with whichever solvent you choose, and wrap it around or lay it atop the stained area and let it sit for 15 minutes or so, before wiping it off (this is often what I do with Goo-Gone, for example).
