Yesterday I received the Buck 124 Frontiersman that I had traded for, with the black Micarta scales (the one that I was looking for someone here to a post a picture of), and I just cannot figure-out why this EXCELLENT knife was recently discontinued from the Buck line...(Note: I spent a couple of hours yesterday rounding the squareish Micarta handle, and "enhancing" the finger-grooves, and now it fits my hand perfectly, and feels wonderfull!).

The blade-shape is EXCELLENT, it easily sharpened to a RAZOR-SHARP edge, and it is a stout, SOLID knife.:).

Here is a (not so great) picture of my excellent Buck 124:

Dann,
It sounds like you used to have one of the more rare versions with the squared off corners. ;)
You don't see too many like that, most have pretty good radiuses on the handles. I agree with you, I wish it was never discontinued. If I could, I would bring it back, along with the Buckmaster, the Kalinga and Akanua, oh, and of course the 532!

Take care,

Joe,

So...Just why WAS the "124" DC'd?

I really can't think of a "better", or a more well-made (SOLID!!) knife, and it's size is just about perfect for most uses.:).

Joe;
The 532 is still available in blue, red, and walnut with the BG-42 steel.

If you want one or two, then email me.

Ron,
The 532 is not in the current catalog although there are certainly dealers with product still in their inventory. Joe knows what has been discontinued.
On the question of why certain models are discontinued, it is occasionally due to production and/or supplier problems, but the overwhelming cause is something called POOR SALES!!!!!!!
If the sales were there, Buck would jump through hoops to solve any other problems.

Larry, thanks for the information and yes the "bottom line" is what determines what will stay and what will go. I don't know why the sale on the 532 were bad (maybe a little too much $$$)but I have one and think it is a hell of a knife...sharp as hell and a nice size.

The Frontiersman is one that got away from me. Every time one is available, I'm fresh outa budget :( , but it's on my list, so I reckon I'll get one eventually. Everything I put on my list comes to me, sooner or later! Might have one already, if I didn't have three 532s!;)

Hey Ron,

I'd THINK about trading my customized 124 for your CS Tai-Pan...:D.:D.

I picked up a 124 from a pawn shop as part of a package with a "Knapp Sport Saw". The saw has a double sheath with room for a knife. The 124 doesn't actually fit the sheath, so I'm looking for both the original knife that came with the saw and the original 124 sheath. Also, any info on the saw. I'm hoping Buck still has the original sheath available. Not wanting to brag, but the 124 is in great shape other than some dings in the guard and pommel, with the squared off micarta handle and I talked them down to $25 on the whole deal.

$25 Bucks?! And you can still sleep at night? ;)
Thats a great deal for a 124 by itself.
Yes, lagging sales has led to the discontinuation of several Buck knives. Its always confusing to me that the knives that I get the most inquiries about are the ones we no longer make. If I had my own store, I would stock it with the 184 Buckmaster, the 532, the 124, the Selector, The Kalinga and Akanua, and the 560 with ATS-34 and BG-42 blades. Oh yeah, and any knife done by Dave Yellowhorse!

Joe,

How about a "Buck/Houser" 124 [with a "revised" (rounded) black Micarta handle (with white spacers), and deeper finger-grooves], ATS-34 steel, and a 7.5 inch blade?.:).

...I can dream, can't I?...:D.

$25 Bucks?! And you can still sleep at night?

Yep, I sleep just fine, thank you very much. Just gotta be careful about tossing and turning too much with that 124 under the pillow!!

Dann,
A Buck / Houser collaboration eh? I think the best way for me to optimise my royalties would be to keep my name off the knife! :D
I told my wife i was not the only person to sleep with knives under his pillow...
