According to Joe H's article (I also searched the forum, the most relevant post ended with the OP in a huff and wasn't that helpful) in the BCCI news letter 12/06 the impregnated birch appeared in 12/82. The question I have is some people call their handles rosewood is this just the impregnated birch? Here is my "birch" 124 it looks just like the ones called rosewood. It is a user and needs some cleaning but boy does it look impressive around the camp fire.

I'm pretty sure whenever you see "rosewood" for the handle on a Buck knife, you are seeing impregnated birch.

Rosewood has usually nothing to do with real rosewood.
It's just wood of a certain look.
The real rosewood is Brazilian rosewood and kind of rare.
I don't even know if the brasilian rosewood plant has even roses or if maybe only the pattern in the wood reminded somebody of roses.

Yes, agreed. It is impregnated birch. I have the same knife, only with a 1994 stamp. It has the full hollow grind and cuts like a lazer. Sea, yours looks to have the modified hollow grind. Do you think it's a 440C blade? DM

In BUCK SPEAK... Cocobola, Rosewood, Cherrywood, Heritage Walnut etc etc are all dye colors, not wood species. Fibron and Pakawood are obsolete tradenames for Dymondwood.

Just what I thought but couldn't find it in writing anywhere. Thank you.
David mine is suppose to be a 1983 (not the original owner), I believe (you know better than me) that the 440c wasn't stopped being used until later.

Yes, I would think your 124 has a blade of 440C. With the modified hollow grind. My notes from Joe H. state that impregnated birch was first used in December 1982. So, it would be difficult to prove if you had one of the 1982 models. Your safer bet is calling it a 1983. Still, that blade steel makes your's a top shelf production knife. I'll be your camping buddies want to hold your 124 when you pull it out. DM
