Just watched the movie since its up for nomination and never saw it before. 1/2 the time i was just thinking what if he just had a sharp knife with him that he could slice through it all in one swoop. Would make it a lot less painful I'd bet. Thoughts?

I'm with you... these rookies that don't know how to sharpen their knives deserve to die trapped under boulders! :D

When I saw how much force he put into the cut and it just gave him red marks I was like what the hell! lol. That fact that his awl was so much sharper was pretty funny to. Was a good movie though.

I love how Danny Boyle is making such diverse movies. Each of them are completely different. This is the same guy that did Sunshine and Trainspotting?

I liked slumdog and this, havent watched any others of his

Yep, and 28 Days Later, Millions, and Slumdog Millionare. Sunshine and Millions were horrible cinematic disasters, though. I guess the dichotomy adds to the diversity of his portfolio?

Still have to see this movie...

New addition to my list of reasons to carry a sharp knife everywhere: Might just need to hack my own arm off.

I loved Sunshine except for the last 20 minutes or so.

Same here. It's definitely one of the most frustrating movies I've ever seen: it has a fantastic first and second act but then goes off the rails in the third act by basically becoming a generic slasher film.

I liked when he said “Lesson: Don’t buy a cheap made-in-China multi-tool!”
That's a good lesson.

Coupled with the story about a doctor in NZ who did double amputation on site with a Leatherman, then that is a good lesson indeed.
