I want to buy a oven to do my own heat treatment. I mostly use 12C27 for my knives. Do any of you know of a tutorial on heat treatment for 12C27? I've asked the question previously in the Toolshed and was refered back to Shop Talk.

12C27 is the same as AUS6 .You will find the HT and working specs here: http://ajh-knives.com/metals.html#metal0
There is a lot of good info on that site.
Study up on the HT process of stainless alloys. You have to exclude all oxygen during the HT.Most makers use a foil packet with a piece of paper inside, wrapped around the blade. The paper burns off at 750 degrees, and vaporizes at 1350,thus removing all the oxygen. This requires a very tight folding technique.Do some searches on the subject before you do any stainless blades.

I don't use Paper in my packs, the heat seems to burn out the oxygen on it's own ok in my case anyway, I've found that some paper will leave marks on the steel,,
I'm not sure why , it's possible that it's the chemicals in some of the papers that does it.? just make sure your pack is air tight..JMO.:)

If you contact Sandvik, they can send you heat treatment information.

Larrin, I look up heat treatment of steels often . There are some websites that are very easy to use . Others like Sandvik are difficult.Yes you can email these companies but it would be so much easier to be able to find info conveniently and quickly on the website.I gave him the Sandvik website section in my Toolshed response.

Tanx a lot for all your help Guys! Thanx again Mete for your referral to Sandvik, but as you’ve said very difficult to use. I’m now reading what ever I can lay my hands on. I’ll come back with my research and you guy’s can have a look if you don’t mind.

I phoned SANDVIK SA (Yes I'm a saffa as well) and got hold of a very helpful guy. He e-mailed me a broacher with an invitation to contact him if I need anything else! I'm not allowed to load attachments in this forum so I'll dump it on my web space for those interested.
