Hey all,

First post here and just wanted to say there is so much info in this forum that admittedly i'm lost.

To the point - I have been looking for a great, dependable, durable, fixed blade for outdoor hiking, camping, wilderness use. This knife will take abuse and be used hard in colorado mountain areas and should be "the one" should a survival situation arise. My gal gave me a Gerber LMF Asek for the holidays.

I have read on this forum that Gerber is taking some abuse lately. While I own many folders, some of which are Gerber from years and years ago, I am looking for thoughts on this particular knife and whether the steel used is solid or crappolla.

Your thoughts and info will be well appreciated.

My Laguiole is made from 12C27.

It's a Swedish steel. I would trust it for a small knife. But maybe not suitable for a chopper.

it's 3/16" thick and just under 5 inches, I don't see why you'd have anything to worry about.

doing what a knife is meant to do you should be fine coouple it with a small folding saw and thier shouldn't be a reason to push the knife further tthan needed. just my 2 cents

Thanks all for your quick responses. I guess another question is - is it just an ok blade/knife... or for the money 100 buckish... should i return it and get something better?? She said she would not be upset as she didn't know what i wanted and just listened to salesman....

Return it? I don't think so.

Since you're new here, you don't know yet that you will get a lot more blades sooner than you think ;)

I can't speak for the knife, but I can for the steel. 12C27 stainless will sharpen right up and hold the edge well. Bark River uses it exclusively for their stainless knives. With rare exception, if one of their knives is not A2, it's 12C27.... Frosts Mora knives use it, and my new EKA H8 is in 12C27 stainless. All are good steeled knives.

I'm not a fan of Gerber products but I'll stand with Cybrok.....keep it! :D

12C27 is a fairly mild, pretty tough steel. I wouldn't expect it to hold an edge as well as more expensive steels. But I would expect it to take a considerable amount of abuse in a survival situation. And Sandvik has a great reputation for the quality and purity of their steel.

Bark River uses it in some of their models, and they make only one grade of knife! Excellent +++

I wouldn't worry about it.

Go ahead and use it and see how you like it. Most of the flack about Gerber is with the Chinese made folders. IIRC the LMFs are still US manufacture. Keep up with the info. here for comparison and make your own informed decision for your next one, and the one after that, and so on. If you keep hanging out here it is going to happen:D.

LOL - you guys crack me up.... Believe me - I already had more blades than any small community should :). I assume most of the people on this site fit in the same category?? In the past they have all been folders and multi tools. Only recently picked up a KBar 5 inch Tanto (cause it was mispriced and got a great deal on it). Now I have the Gerber - but was thinking of exchanging for Falkniven F1 or some other highly recomended knife on this forum. Mabe a RAT, Ranger or Ontario knife... of one of the knives of Alaska models??? I guess I am just looking for the best knife that will accompany me backcountry in conjunction with my multitool.

I do have a funny feeling that because of this forum I will be getting a few more fixed blades and will have to ponder which one gets to come along for an adventure each time i go out. :)

:)

In that case, take a look at the "Bark River Knife and Tool" website, and Bob Dozier's website.

I believe so, yes.

We don't find spare change in our couches*. We find spare knives and ammo**.

*Possibly because we have no spare change.

**True story.

I can almost rival that first picture.... (and i just found this site). I am with you on what i find in my couch cushions.... wait... i don't have a couch anymore - i traded it for an XD..... :)

Thanks,

Interesting site... I guess this knife should be plenty tough for what i would put it through. I hear you on the serrations... wished it didn't have those - but not sure i want to grind them off on a new knife....
