12c27 is the type of stainless steel used in frost moras, I was wondering what quality of steel this is and how it rates to other more conventionally know stainless steels such as 420's, 440's Aus, etc etc in terms of quality, and edge retention. any help would be great. Thanks>

many rank it with 440C and AUS6. the sandvik steels represent good value for the dollar. i prefer 13c26, the sharper version of 12c27. 12c27m is the tougher version. i believe the beauty of these steels is the high hardness achieved without being brittle. something to do with less undissolved carbides in the steel, not that i understand what that means. i guess they qualify as impurities.

on a side note, i just ordered a grohmann #1 for $19.99 and a wetterling 13h for $21.77. i ordered a gerber on closeout as well, they're givin em away at bladematrix.

If you ask Mike Stewart, who has probably made as many semi custom knives as any individual in the US, he uses it exclusively as his stain resistant product. In his heat treat, he feels it nearly equals what he makes in A2 and many consider his blades to be absolutely Top Notch.

Mike is the owner founder of Bark River Knife and Tool and was the shop operator at BlackJack and Marples for a while. He is a VERY knowledgeable man in his field and very highly respected.

Its my favorite of the stainlesses Riley. I've got a few Bark Rivers with it, and they shine brightly. Its what I carry in the canoe with me.

Oh, the username is new. I used to be aproy1101.

I like my stainless Frost's Mora alot, I think it's 12c27 as you said. I don't know if the rumor about Swedish iron ore being purer is true, I think they just have good quality control. Anyway it sharpens up nicely and holds its edge very well, I couldn't patina or stain when I tried (:)/:() Really a great blend of the properties we look for in a blade steel, IMO.

http://www.frosts.se/index_2_uk.html <---Frost's has a good website, some really informative articles on it.

(keep in mind I'm usually a pretty adamant carbon steel fan)

ragnar has a few full tang blades that you can put handles on your self, all are made of the 12c27 steel, i have been making a knife from one of these blanks i like the steel so far, but have not cut a lot with it.
