How is this compared to Buck's 420HC? I cant decide between the Vantage Avid (small) or the Select Small. Any ideas?

Welcome, Air. The Sandvik steel is an in between steel, fitting between 420 and S30V. Plus it's elements and mfg. process gives it a small grain matrix allowing it to take a finer edge. Many makers like it's performance. DM

I've used it several times and don't find worth the extra money. As a matter of fact, I prefer 420HC over both of the upgraded steels Buck offers.

here at post falls most the employees seem to like s30v much better then Sandvik ..
to such a digree I did not see any one with one in sandvik ///

I like s30v better than sandvik. But if I let my s30v blades get real dull it takes more to get them back to shaving sharp. But they stay sharp a lot longer.

I like sandvik a lot takes a touch longer to sharpen than the softer steels like 8cr but not as long as an s30 or 154cm from what I have noticed. I had a Kershaw in stone wash and it was a very good looking blade. Functionally I am probably in the minority as I like stuff like 8cr as it takes no more than 30 seconds on a fine stone to get it back to scary sharp every Noe and then via moderate use.

For daily heavy use I wouldn't go for the sandvik though.
