I have been considering the purchase of a Canal Street Cutlery Half Moon Pie Trapper made from 14-4 CrMo steel.

I know nothing about this steel and can find almost no info on the net, is there anyone that has expeience with it or knows how it compares to other steels? Comparisons would help as I amfamiliar with quite a few of the steels available out there.

If anyone owns one of these knives your opinions would also be appreciated.

Thanks.

Same composition spec as 154CM and ATS34. I dont have the slightest idea about the quality of the structure and the purity though.

All in all a coarse carbide knife steel with it's up's and downs. I personally think Canal Street makes a very nice product so I think you have a good blade there.

The designation sounds an awful lot like the Chinese 8Cr13MoV used in the Byrd line of knives. Just a wild stab in the dark.

Seems like Microtech used this steel on a few knives if I'm not mistaken. I think it is a Timken/Latrobe product.

Yeah, it's a US made steel, similar to 154CM. I have never used it, but if it performs as well as it looks on paper, it should be a good steel.

I have one. It's a winner.

The blade on mine was hardened to a 59HRC.

Edge retention when cutting manila rope is on the order of the alloys mentioned, 154CM and ATS34 if similarly hardened. I have a mini-grip in 154CM that measured 60HRC. It holds an edge a bit better. I have a Ka-Bar Large Dozier in AUS8 at 59HRC. The Canal Street was much better than the AUS8.

The fit and finish on mine were excellent. The blade had excellent snap and the blade was nice and stable when opened. Dang that handle just fits my hand so nice. It's just a nice feeling piece of cutlery. A joy to carry and use.

Well I finally picked up one of the Canal Street Half Moon Trappers with Amber Carved Stag Bone handles and could not be more pleased.

I purchased this knife from KnivesShipFree.com based on Derricks recommendation and he was spot on in his description of these knives.

The fit and finish are top shelf. The overall exquisite quality is on par with the few customs that I have owned or handled.

For about $60.00 I can't imagine being able to purchase more quality in a slip joint.

This is indeed a great slippie. Perfect size too, nice and slim with a lot of blade packed into the handle.

Another thing, this knife was amazingly sharp right out of the box.
Easily push-cuts even very thin paper.

This is about my 6th or 7th Canal Street, including a D2 fixed blade, and I've been very, very impressed with them all.
