I started my Sunday morning carving out a spoon, it wasn't for any particular reason I was just having a little fun. I was thinking to myself how great the new convex edge is working so I figured what the hay I will post up a little review. I can tell right away that the blade just glides effortlessly through the wood like a hot knife through butter! And I noticed while carving the spoon that I have a lot less hand fatigue. Here are a few pics of my progress.

What kinda wood is the spoon carved from? I've never done it but it looks like a great way to kill a little time.

You know what I'm actually not sure, it was pre cut for fire wood and it was wet when I found it. I can tell you it was some hard stuff though! I'm sure somebody here on the forum will tell us what kind of wood it is just by looking at it :D

Looks like tree wood to me.
The spoons looking good! I always get frustrated and toss it half way through.

It was supposed to be deeper and wider but it split in half so I threw it in the bushes lol but after about an hour I gave it another shot and that is what came out of it.

That's about how it would probably go for me. Except for the giving it another shot part. :D

Your post inspired me to try and carve a spoon with my 16. this is something i have never tried despite all the survival courses i have been to. i have however made burn bowls and a larger type spoon that was burned in but never carved from scratch, mostly because in a survival situation the last thing we would worry about is silverware. but while carving it i sliced thru my pinky finger pretty deep and decided to take a break from it for a while. ill resume it 2moro or some other time when i am no longer pissed at the spoon (yea i know it was my fault but its funner to blame the spoon)

So here is the un finished spoon, i still need to round the handle and back side some and finish up the indention and pretty it up but that wont be tonight.

It's looking pretty good! At least it didn't end up in the bushes like mine lol hope your finger is ok

Lol, no it didnt end up in the bushes but my finger almose did :) no for real tho ill be fine. yours really turned out looking nice and that was my inspiration for trying it so thank you!

Man ill tell ya when i seen your post earlier i didnt expect it to be so difficult but the indention in the spoon head is really a pain and it takes quite a while. after posting i was upset with myself a little for giving up on it and figured id do ahead and try and finish it. it could still be better but for me i think im bout done with it now.

Yea it's tough hollowing it out with only a knife. What I do is use the tip to outline where I'll be cutting then score it in a grid like pattern and chip it out. Once it's deep enough i will take a little more care to smooth it out. I haven't finished mine yet with sandpaper but once I do it will look way better. For your first spoon it looks great and hey it will work!

Thanks man, and thanks for that tip, scoring it like you said is a great idea and probably would of saved me some time. i will try that on the next one.

Great lookin spoons! I really like the longer but skinnier head. Ive never tried to whittle a spoon but i may have to give it a try now that ive seen yalls inspiration. Keep up the good work!
