What is the difference between a model 14 and a model 16? Would greatly appreciate a description of the differences and thoughts about which would be a better first acquisition for someone who has never owned a Randall.

The model 16 has a slightly narrower blade. The "point" is different. The hilt is normaly single on the 16, double on 14. The blade thickness is the same. It is common to find "saw " nothches on the back of the blade on the 16. The steel is stainless on the 16, the 14 can be o1 or S/S.

The sheath on the 14 is usually type C and the 16 can be wax, or nylon with a plastic sleeve. I bought all 3 for my dive knife. Oh yea, the 16 is considered a dive knife, the 14 a HD outdoor knife.

I prefer the 16 with a wax sheath but you can get that in a model 14. So other than the shape and size of the blade there is no difference imho. :)

One more thing I thought of, you can special order options on the model 14 Attack.

Assuming that you're referring to the 16 SP#1, not much. The 16's slightly smaller and lighter. That's about it.

Now, the 16 Diver's another knife altogether.

Additionally, the blade width (spine to edge) is typically 1.125" on the Model #16, 1.250" on the Model #14. Further, the blade length on the #16 is ~7.0", whereas the #14 is ~7.5". The difference in width and length thus becomes a noticeable difference in weight as well....
