I e-mailed Bertie Rietveld with a couple of questions about his contact wheels and the bearings and shafts, with no luck. I keep getting the e-mails returned as undeliverable. Does anyone have a good e-mail address for him. The one I used I got off his site, bertie@batavia.co.za. I seem to remember reading on one of the forums there was someone in the States handling his contact wheels. Thanks.

Tom, here is Bertie's web site. The address you have is correct according to the contact page. I used Bertie's wheels for my surface grinder. Chris and Anne Reeve were handling Bertie's affairs in the U.S. when I purchased my wheels. You might try an overseas call as his number is also on his site. If you have no luck, I would try contacting the Reeves.

I believe that was my post of a few months back. The e-mail you have, bertie@batavia.co.za is correct as I did quite a bit of correspondence back and forth with Bertie. I purchased a 8" contact wheel from Bertie for my KMG and at a lesser cost than I could get anywhere else.
Hopefully, you will be able to reach him, as I highly recomend his contact wheels and he is great to deal with also!
My thanks too Nathan for informing me on using Bertie.
Good Luck, Jon

Pops Knife Supply has those wheels! I got a smooth 12 incher and it is the nicest wheel I have ever used!!! I actually looked into getting all my old wheel re-tired with the same material he uses but found out that us production of the same material does not contain formaldehyde so it is not stable at speed or for any length of time without getting gummy...

So just do yourself a favor and buy all yoru wheels from him!:) I would if I had the $$$!!

2 thumbs up!

I have to say Bertie's wheels are the best I have ever ground a blade on and his price is outstanding...

Bertie is an ace to work with....

Bertie does alot of shows so he is somtimes slow to reply, hang in there your wait will be worth it

I've e-mailed Bertie, or tried to, several more times, with no luck. The e-mail keeps coming back as:
RCPT To:<bertie@batavia.co.za>
<<< 550 relay not permitted
550 <bertie@batavia.co.za>... User unknown

Any suggestions? Thanks.
Tom

Tom, I'll try that email addy, too. I'll direct him to this thread and mention you can't reach him. Hope that'll help a bit.

Guys, since I am in "the business", so to speak, I wanted to see what kind of error I got. My ISP is a little more generous with the full error report, which reads:

<<<bertie@batavia.co.za>: host
outbound.mmc1.jhb.tiscalibusiness.co.za[196.28.101.21] said: 550 relay not permitted>>

The problem appears to be with his ISP, or at least one upstream from him, but situated in SA. The SMTP server in question is seeing everything as a relay. Typically, most corporate email servers do not allow message relay because that is what spammers use for their dirty work. Occasionally, a normally reliable SMTP server used by an ISP will generate this message if the software is accidentally set to deny relay. I have seen this happen several times during software upgrades.

Tom, your best bet is to call Bertie on the phone and talk with him and also to discuss the error message above. It is likely that he is unaware of any problems. Your other option is to contact Tiscali, SA, a large ISP in Europe and Africa, and see if they can address the issue. Here is Tiscali's page. You might be able to contact them as well.

Tom,
I've had an occasion or two where Bertie didn't respond, but in time, he did.
Got several of his wheels and they rock.

At the same time, when I got my KMG, the 14" wheel came from Rob, and rocks too :)

Standing in front of that big sob is an awesome experience, even with variable speed. Sure like the way it hollow grinds, though.

It sure is a nice hollow, isn't it? Clear across edge-to-spine on a 1.5" piece of 1/8" stock.

I'd run one even bigger if Rob decided to offer it.

Kit, it's not a problem trying to get him to reply, his site isn't working right, so you can't e-mail him. They'll probably get the situation corrected on his end when he discovers he's not getting much e-mail. Thanks.

just fwiw....this is the email address that Bertie used to reply to me when I had some contact wheel questions a month or two ago:

rietveld AT netdial.co.za

in case anyone is not aware...posting an email address in a forum generates a lot of junk mail for that person.

please edit your posts in a way to "break the link".

p.s. this is why we no longer have a "member's list" here at BFC. Email addresses were being harvested for spammers.

Bertie e-mailed me back using the e-mail address that GavinD posted. Thanks for the help everybody.
