Just ordered two knives in these steels respectively. Wondering the sharpening difficulty of these and if any specific angle has been found to last better than others. The 14c-28n is a folder and the 8670m is a fixed blade

Both steels should be easy to sharpen, especially at the 58-61HRC range. 14n28n is a slightly more wear resistant steel than AEB-L, but not by much at all. AEB-L is known as the stainless steel for people who like carbons steel, as it sharpens easily to a keen apex. 8670m is a tough chromium alloyed carbon steel, similar to 5160. Also should be very easy to sharpen. No fancy stones needed with these.

Both steels also have a very fine grain structure, so can handle the acute angles well. A good place to start is 15° per side, adjust as necessary.

sounds like you picked up a couple knives from southern grind and if so they do a great job with their steels. You should be very happy with their performance.

Both indeed are southern grind. A fixed blade jackel and a tanto folder

thats funny you have the exact jackal that I do,I also have a spider monkey and the Jackal Pup.The pup is a cool little fixed blade that is cool to carry horizontally as your second knife.I didn't get a bad monkey because it was a larger folder than what I like to carry--I prefer a 3 to 3.25 blade.

The bad monkey fit my size range and feels really great in hand. And as to having the same jackal that just means we both have superior tastes in tools !

Hi guys, sorry to revive an old thread, but just got a spider monkey (911 edition) and a Jackal myself. Having a hell of a time getting a good edge on the Jackal (using spyderco sharpmaker) even with diamond stones. Any idea of the factory grind included angle?
