I have been trying to get my mittens on thin stock 14C28N for a few years. The only supplier I saw that even had it in stock was GFS, but their thinnest stock is 3mm. Not too bad, but it is a cutlery steel that should be widely available in 1.5mm-2.5mm thicknesses. I get it. It's a nitrogen steel, not like AEB-L. And I know a great candidate would be Nitro V. Would prefer the Sandvick steel, personally.

Even after the discussion about 14C28N and how AKS redirects to their AEB-L stock when you select 14C28N, we were told that they would have it in stock fall 2025. Or was that 2024?

I have looked at Admiral, Jantz, GFS, AKS, NJSB, SB Spcl, all of them.

One would think you could source it easily, thin stock 14C28N. I sure hope that Chuck, Aldo, or someone could get it in stock. It is one of the best steels out there, especially for the price. I have a few pocket knives in it, and I would love to push the performance as a custom heat treater and offer it in my knives.

Pops has it in .118" thick 3mm in 8.27x12" sheets. I just finished cutting up 2 of these sheets for 20 knives.

Jantz has it, 1.5" or 2" wide, in a variety of thicknesses. Search 14C28N and it will pop up; it doesn't come up on their stainless steel page. They have 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm etc per their website

You might try Admiral Steel for thinner steel - they've got .079" and .098" as well as thicker steel.

Great. Thanks guys. That was a big help. Sure enough, using the search funtion on these websites works a lot better than trying to navigate to the right page.

Admirals price on 14C28N is about the cheapest going for any steel but their shipping is high so make sure to order enough to make the shipping worth it.

I recently crunched some numbers for a friend and with $200 of 14C from Admirals with $60 shipping the price came out to $0.365 per square inch. For same thickness AEB-L from AKS with free shipping price is $0.534/sqin.

I had wanted to buy a large order (for me) of 14C28N from Admiral last summer.

I placed my order. They got back to me saying that some of the steel wasn't available. And shipping was going to be More.
Then a couple days later they got back to me also saying that some the steel I wanted needed to be cut in half, and Again shipping was going to be even more. My batch of steel kept getting smaller, and the shipping kept going up.

Idk why this was happening?
Getting very frustrated with them, I cancelled my order.
I hope they fix that

When I dealt with Admiral a few yr back it was the shipping that ate me up also. Yep, they say on the website the 8 ft long pieces require cutting in half, but I got the 6 ft pieces in one length. If a person lived close enough to pick the order up they'd have decent prices.

So cranked more numbers...

1 piece of 0.079 14c from Admiral 2x72" costs 35.08 and shipping is 46.84 so $0.568/sqin.

2 pieces it is same for shipping so $0.406/sqin.

Free shipping AKS costs $22.70 for 0.080 2x23.5 so $0.483/sqin.

Don't let high shipping rate detour you, calculate it out and see who has the best deal even if a company is dangling free shipping.

In 2019 I purchased 210kg (462lb) of 2mm (.08") Sandvik 14C28N thru a local distributor, but before that I got the quote from Sandvik direct, it was $15/kg or $6.80/pound (I paid more to the distributor of course)
I don't know if these prices changed, they probably did

I like your style!

UPS raised prices for oversized parcels. I use to buy 14C48N in 6 ft lengths from Admiral. The last year or so I've been letting them know that cutting it to 36" length is fine by me. I may lose one average knife with the two 36" pieces vs one 72", but the savings on shipping are worth it. I always try to buy at least $200-$300 worth of steel, shipping isn't that much more. Availability has been an issue, but, with all the questions surrounding tariffs, etc from Europe I understand. Since I'm a hobbyist and not full time, it's not as much of an issue to me.

Same here, I used to buy 6’ bars of CPM154 from them but after getting the quotes from them on shipping 6’ length’s vs 36” I had them cut in half.

I bought my last lot from Eurotechni in France. 2mm (.080"), 2.5, 3mm all available.
It's a great steel. If they called it Cutmaster 2000 or something it would sell for a heap more.
