For a soldier in the field knife, a front serrated blade keeps cutting much longer. But, I don't like them either. Probably because I haven't used one long enough to appreciate it.

Not a fan of the serrated edge either but I like the OD scales. I might have to look into this come spring.

OK, I will stop. I do not understand why it is a big deal and who it hurts.

If people were allowed to start threads announcing every great deal they come across it could quickly get out of hand as the boards were flooded with these posts. This would also make it nearly impossible to differentiate between members with good intentions (like yourself) and outright spammers.

That is the biggest problem, it would encourage people to join just to promote their products and that is not what this forum was conceived for. The purpose of the forum is the discussion of knives, not the sale of them. If a dealer wants to sell his wares here they need to pay the fees and place their deals in the right section. Anyone interested in buying can look in the "dealers for sale" section and that keeps this forum section from being filled with ads for knives.

Add to this, Paying Members have for sale threads on this site as well as Paying Dealers.
It would not be right to take sales away from folks that are paying for it.

Other than that, happy posting.

**EDIT** Absintheur basically said what I did. Beat me to it.

Is deal spotting against the rules?
Unfortunately, yes.

I like deal spotting as I've gotten some of my best buys that way. Still, the rules are the rules. I suppose some people might push their own products, otherwise. There are astounding deals out on the Internet at times.

I understand the rule, but I also think that context is important.
In a few discussions where for example recommendations about affordable folding knives are requested, helpful people have posted info including prices at a certain shop. To answer a few of those questions I sometimes posted a link to the Browning Ice storm at CDNN, or to Ragweed forge. In other discussions people mention how happy they are with the service from for example AG Russel or Graham.
If these helpful reactions would be removed, it could become quite a barren folder in my opinion.
Cheers !

Well, the new one is uglier that is for sure.
And aren't people tired of serrations already?

I don't like the liner-lock, but otherwisw I can see carrying such a knife (if I didn't already own several knives that I like more, anyway).

I have the one-hand Trekker, which I believe is essentially the same model unless the soldier has a higher manufacturing quality.
Anyway, the One-hand Trekker is very nice indeed, well made and nicely universal. I do think it even has 2 advantages compared to the new Soldier knife: it also features a toothpick and tweezers. I don't quite understand why they were left out the Soldier knife? Tweezers often come useful in the field.
About the serrations, well it is my only knife with serrations of some sort. In this case the light serrations work well on food in my experience.
As a summary, I do like it as much as my classic soldier knife. It sees less carry because of the bigger bulk, but I intend to take it on a holiday trip.

I suppose the serrations on the end of my Trekker's knife make it a 'Seat Belt Cutter' - a new function?

I like the toothpick and tweezers, but, oddly enough, don't miss them on the Farmer model. Now to find a 'previous' model 'soldier's knife'...

Thats 18.4 CHF cost per unit.

1 CHF = 0.8928 USD

= $16.47 cost per unit.

Seems like the new knife is low cost. Will hit the streets as $33 MSRP maybe?

New soldier’s knife from Victorinox

8 September 2008

Victorinox will produce the new soldier’s knife for the Swiss army. A contract was signed today between Victorinox AG, Ibach and armasuisse, the procurement, technology and real estate centre of the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport. The soldier’s knife '08 replaces the previous Swiss soldier's knife, which was introduced in 1961.

The evaluation phase of the new soldier’s knife began in February 2008, when armasuisse issued an invitation to tender. A total of seven suppliers from Switzerland and other countries were invited to participate in the evaluation process. Functional models submitted by suppliers underwent practical testing by military personnel in July 2008, while laboratory tests were used to assess compliance with technical requirements.

A cost-benefit analysis was conducted and the model with the best price/performance ratio was awarded the contract. The order for 75,000 soldier’s knives plus cases is worth CHF 1.38 million.

The new soldier’s knives will be issued to troops during the first basic training sessions of 2009.

Pity. I love the old Soldiers- kind of like Kamp Kings and Demo Knives. They should keep making them. However the front serrations are both good and useful, especially for cutting through soldierly things like cord and webbing.

No tweezers i don't know if i will buy i like the look of the knife and i think tweezers and a ball point pen would be some thing a soldier would use.
