well to be honest the blade was from a 150 year old carving knife,i baught it for about 20p from the dump a year ago ,and here its sat since with me wondering what to do with it. so this morning i set about turning it into a usefull piece.

the steel is of a realy nice quality with a little surface pitting but hey the guy who made its beendead 100 years! i have a little bit of copper thats about 8mm thick and so this was used for the fingerguard and the bolster,i dont usually like finger guards but i thaught it would be a bit more victorianesque, the bolster is held in place with a brass pin.for the handle i used some nice english oak from the local estate.

obviously theres a bit more work to go but its pretty much how it will be.

thanks for looking.

Kewl! I haven't done much of it latey -- moved, and never really reset up my meager tools -- but I used to enjoy taking "scrap" items like old power hacksaw blades, files, etc., and turning them into a something new and useful. Never was much good at it, but it was fun. Looks like nice work you did.

Very good idea, rescuing a blade and giving it a whole new lease of life.Nice workmanship too!

I'm not going to jump on this bandwagon. I doubt this carving knife had too much value initially, but I'd hate to see someone take a rare artifact and turn it into something that looks like its straight from a bazaar in Pakistan. Oak handles and a brass guard just don't go with a 19th century British blade.

On the other hand, I'd probably still be negative if it did look like an authentic 19th century hunting knife/bowie, because it would be fake.

Not meaning to offend anyone, I just wanted to register my disagreement.
