I'm pretty Proud of the steel I use and treat myself
so I'm going to beep My own horn just a little.
note the dates...I made this knife in 2000
Ron called me before this deer season started and said he was
going to bring the knife in to touch up. he's still going with it.
though he bent the blade slightly driving it with a rock
though the pelvic bone of the moose,
it didn't brake, the blade is just 3" long hollow ground
and about 5/8" wide and under 1/8" thick at the spine..
Ron is an avid hunter and fisherman.
I wish he'd bring it in so I can see it again.:( :)

Two years ago, my best friend had Danny Gray build me a custom knife. I appreciated the knife because it was made
specifically for me and it was the only one of its kind. The first time I used it to clean some fish and later to gut
and skin out a deer, I realized what a great knife it is but never realized the true value and what an exceptional
knife it really is until I used it to gut out a 766 lb. moose. While getting ready for moose hunting, The Maine Moose
Hunting Guide, and a friend said to make sure and take extra knives as they would dull very quickly. The
only knife I used was the Gray knife and even used it to cut through the pelvic bone when I realized I didn’t have a
saw or axe with me. I bent the blade just a little but the knife is still sharp. Thanks Danny, this is one remarkable
knife. Ronnie Green Plymouth, Maine

Hi Dan, My daughter shot her first deer yesterday, she really didn't want to gut it out herself but agreed to watch and
maybe try it next time. My knife tp://www.kynd.com/~graydg/knife148.html did one more job and is ready for
the next. Do your knives ever get dull? Actually, it will probably need a touch up by the end of the season.
Love that knife......... Ronnie Green

It's an excellent steel but please tell him to buy a saw. Iuse a small folding saw and that does save damaging the knife.Happiness is a good custom knife.

Nice work Danny. "If You dont toot your own horn once in a while someone will use it for a spittoon"

Dan that's great, had I known I'd have tooted your horn for you. :D I had my first experience with my own heat treating this month. It was an O1 blade used to skin out a (pretty darn big) Iowa deer. The knife was still sharp, though not shaving sharp. He could have probably cleaned out another animal if he had to but it would have been work before he was done... Your experience makes me want even more to nail that heat treat down. Thanks for sharing and keep them going out like that!

this is a picture of it
the blade profile was ground to mimic the knife he had
in size and shape
as you can see the original Blade would have been worn
it's a small just right all around hunter.in my opinion at least:)
Blade 3" long hollow ground
and about 5/8" wide and under 1/8" thick at the spine
Thanks Guys:)
