I'm looking for something with 154CM or better blade steel and a G10 handle (never held G10 and i'm really curious about it).

I figure i've got around $60 to spend and just wondering if there's anything out there that can fit my criteria.

I was gonna get a BM 550 (mostly due to the Axis lock) but I hear so much positive things about G10 that now I think I might want something in that. Is G10 that good?

G-10 makes for excellent handle material in knives. It's rigid and tough stuff...non-reactive to chemicals and retains its grippyness when wet. It looks kind of boring, but is hard to beat for functionality.

What makes G-10 so popular in knives is the ability to texture the surface for increased/decreased grippability (is that a word?) Spyderco and Kershaw texture theirs so it's very grippy, Benchmade less so. On some Benchmade models, the G-10 actually feels kind of like plastic. IIRC, Spyderco has theirs custom made.

You can get a Kershaw Leek in S30V and G-10 for around $60. Another recommendation is the Byrd Cara-Cara or Meadowlark in G-10. These can be had for about $20-$25 and would be an excellent way to give G-10 a "test-run" without spending much cash. Make no mistake though...those Byrd's are very nice knives.

Never mind G-10. Get the 154CM Buck 110 with wooden scales from Bass Pro Shop.

Those Bass Pro models are interesting because they're using the new CPM154, instead of 154CM...I think they're the only production knives using it right now. But why the in the world do they coat the blades on them (and on the Cabela's S30V version)?

... uh well this is not surprising since G10 is fiber reinforced plastic. G-10 is an epoxy glass laminate. That means glass fabric impregnated with epoxy resin. Aside from knife handles, it is used for circuit boards. You can modify the surface finish by how it is laid up.

Does it feel all that different from FRN? I have an endura 4 and the handle is very grippy but that's mostly due to the volcano pattern thingy.

I guess I'll probably have to just go to the local sporting goods store to handle some knives in G10 to see if it's worth worrying about when i buy my next knife.

A lot of people don't like FRN, but do like G10.

They both feel good to me, but I help people make parts for airplanes out of plastics so I may have an unfair bias.

I think this is one of those subjective things that you will have to determine for yourself.

yes, it feels different from FRN but mainly because of the stiffness and how it's finished...checkered, blasted etc. FRN is mould-injected. G10 isn't.

The first time I felt G-10 was when I held a Spyderco Manix. It put the FRN Spydercos that I had just handled to shame. I'm still fighting the urge to spend the $150 CAD on one. Such a nice knife.

G10 feels different from FRN. FRN feels cheap. Hard to describe, you just need to handle both yourself.

Regarding the knife question, I just came back from a local store and saw a folder with G10 scales and tho I don't remember what type of blade steel it used, the guy told me it's similar to ATS-34. The guy's cool there tho and doesn't BS me, so I trust him in that. It was $60 also and was a nice folder. Action was super smooth...AXIS smooth. I'm sure they'd ship it to you if you wanted it. It has a clip point blade.

The benchmade vex gets close with it's chinese 440C ish equivalent and G10, it's less than 40 dollars. But if you want more, I'd say to look into one of Kershaw's mid range G10 models. I prefer the Avalanche...it's about 80 dollars, but has a coated blade (if you like that kind of thing), nice G10 and S30V. So you'll have to pay significantly more than you wanted to, but you do get it back in the nice steel upgrade. Also, i think this G10 is the best out there.

As per FRN, it definitely IS underrated, but between G10 and FRN, there's just no competition for me. FRN has treated me pretty well...it's held up nice, doesn't show the drops too badly. But G10 blows it out of the water for quality feel, looks, and toughness. I've been in some sticky situations at the tops of ladders when I had an unplanned need of hammer, and the G10 end of my Para delivered--and once I got the paint off the G10 from whatever I needed to pound, it didn't look any different at all.

i think the benchmade 910 for 68.00 is a steal. great knife, i had one but traded it. with benchmade's lifesharp service how could you go wrong?

G-10 & CarbonFiber are my 2 favorite materials to hang onto a knife with. Light and Tough. G-10 Has a good amount of grip in all conditions. 154cm is a slick blade steel and takes a little finess to resharpen. Both Emerson & Benchmade have knives w/both but are a bit pricey$$$ I have seen some old Gerber w/both on ebay but they are Rare. You can find S30V & G-10 from far more Mfg's. And this is just my opinion, but I feel the CPM-S30V is a way better knife steel! You will not be unhappy with the G-10. Try a Cara Cara from Byrd aka (Spyderco/China Div.) $24.00 G-10 and a 420/AUS8 Steel. L8R ~baba~

Hey I just remembered, I saw Some Kershaw Bumps on eBay that have G-10 & 154cm for around $85. to $95. These are cool knives with premium materials & Assisted Opening from Kershaw for under $100.00. Give a look. ~baba~

Do any BM's come in G10? I really like the axis lock and want a knife with it but now i'm all hyped up on G10. I might delay my purchase to save up more money if there is something out there.

I also really like the leaf blade shape like the Manix. If the manix had an axis lock it'd be my dream knife.

A lot of Benchmades come in g10. The 710, the new apparition, the gravitator, the 960, the sequel...off the top of my head.

As per the spec bumps on ebay, I'm pretty sure that no spec bumps were in 154CM. I think you're referring to cpm154. Pretty dang confusing.

Just searched Benchmade's website and the 14210 looks to be my dream knife (and only around 30 or so more dollars then my budget)..........except that it's a bit too small. If they had a version that had a 3.25" - 3.75" blade i'd be in seventh heaven. Well they do have a larger version but not in G10

The 722 would be great too but I can only find it in a Tanto blade.

I don' think you'll find 154CM and G10 new for $60. Keep an eye on the exchange, I sold my Ares (154CM and two tone G10) for $50 not too long ago, you might find another offer similar.

Yeah after looking around I quickly found that out so I'm gonna wait a couple months save a buck here and there and up my limit to 90-100
