i have been looking into getting a BM mini griptillian as a work knife but one of my concerns is the blade steel as i need something that is relatively easy to sharpen, so is 154CM easy to sharpen or should i look into other steels such as VG10 or CTSBD1 which i so far have had good experience with.

thanks for any input it is very much appreciated-
Dave

Easy is a relative term. I've not had any problems with 154cm. It's been around since the 70's and is used by a bunch of knife makers.

If you have problems post a message in the maintenance sub forum.

I've had really good experience with 154cm, super easy to strop to a "hair popping" edge, might be one of my favorite steels, well really CPM 154.. But still a good steel. But if you're looking for a solid steel and don't mind sharpening a bit D2 is always good.

I prefer sharpening 154CM over VG10, personally. It does respond well to ceramics, diamonds, or just loaded strops. Don't know anything about BD-1, but VG10 has never been a steel I liked very much. It just doesn't respond the way 154CM does for me. Like EyeDog says, it all depends on your skills and kit, but most knife folks, I think, will say that 154CM is pretty easy to maintain once you develop some sharpening technique.

154 cm sharpens real easy on a $20 smiths tri hone, and even better on a DMT Fine Diamond stone

I find 154cm to be about as easy to sharpen as vg 10. Stropping will leave a sharper edge on 154, at least when I do it...

154cm is all Emerson uses because of its relative ease of sharpening (including improvised abrasives ala coffee mug bottom, car window edge, etc) and toughness-to-edge holding balance.

In my experience, 154CM is a good performer but still really user-friendly. I found out it was sometimes easier to reprofile than 440C and easier to put a hair-popping edge on. Edge retention is fine, maybe better in my book than VG10 and probably equal to 440C. In this matter it's not so much the steel but the heat treat, its quality, the consistency of the process and the final QC applied by the brand...

Be aware that Emerson's 154CM isn't like in Benchmade. Emersons have less HRC.

It does depend on how hard it is. I have a folder that's in 154CM and is hard to sharpen, but most are like VG10.

I find 154cm and in particular on my BM Grip ( it is in my EDC rotation ) holds an edge well and I strop it after a few days of use and.it stays shaving sharp. Trick is for sharpening any steel don't let it get too dull before you sharpen it so you never have to remove a lot of steel.

My experiences with that steel have been with benchmade, and all were great. Especially with sharpening and achieving a razor edge.

154cm and VG10 should be very similar in terms of ease/difficulty in sharpening... If you can sharpen one without a hitch, you'll have no problems with the other in about the same amount of time and strokes.
