154cm or d2?

I would choose D2 by far. I like its superior edge retention and I have no problem sharpening it with my belt sander. I live by the beach but I have zero problem maintaining carbon steel, let alone a 12% tool steel. CPMD2 is my favorite steel other than ZDP-189

It depends on what you want the knife to do? I prefer D2 for just about everything but 154cm is no slouch either. D2 makes a great working steel.

Of course we are assuming good heat treat on both steels.

Self defense knife. I'm basically torn between a Benchmade 710d2 or a Benchmade 950 Rift. I like both knives. However, the Rift is made of 154cm, which strikes me as odd since it's a "black" class knife.

I prefer 154cm by a hair. I'm actually a s30v guy hands down but in my opinion the 145 and s30v are easier to sharpen and retain an edge better. Really though it's splitting hairs between the three steels.
That being said, I've only had/have experience with the Spyderco Paramilitary CPMD2.

In a self defense role I personally would lean towards D2 but only slightly. I think either steel from a reputable mfg. would serve your purposes quite well. I would not hesitate to purchase a blade for this purpose based solely on the steel type (between D2 and 154CM). I would choose the style/design that suits your needs and not worry about the steel type as much in this case.

I like D2 because of the edge retention I have experienced with it. Most of the experience I have had is with Dozier D2. It's THEE BEST IMHO.

154cm or d2 from who?

If it is Benchmade, I'd go 154cm as they general do a pretty good heat-treat on the steel.

In a self defense knife, I would choose 154CM as it is a little tougher, better corrosion resistance, easier to sharpen and edge retention is less important

If you are using it for SD, the steel used probably is your last concern, ergo should be your priority choosing a SD knife

Then I'll most likely go with the 950. The handle looks more like my grip wouldn't slip since it has finger grooves as opposed to the 710. Anyone have the 710 and the 950 to give some insight?
EDIT: OK, so it doesn't really have finger grooves...maybe a pinky groove. ;)
