154CM versus CPM 154CM

I've heard that Crucible is now making a "Crucible Particle Metallurgy" 154CM steel (same particle process as their S30V/S90V). Does anyone know if any major knife manufacturers are using this? For instance, are my new Benchmade Barrage and Rift made from it?

Thanks!

The OD Blurs used CPM-154.
The next color (I'm not saying) will also us CPM-154. Look for about 300pcs on the that one.

Just a short question: what exactly is the difference between CPM-154CM and 154CM?

It (I think I know what color you're talking about) actually made it into production?! I'm stoked. :D

Yes production, no on color you are thinking about.

BLUR
Am I close?

No, not close.

:D

I believe it is referred to as the US version of ATS-34 and in saying that, the CPM-154 is the Crucible powdered metal tech version of 154CM.
I think I said that right.

That sucks about the color thing, I was looking forward to the one color especially after the pictures that Thomas has posted. Oh well, I'm sure I'll like the new color.

I prefer cpm154 to s30v. Nowadays it's used in a lot of custom knives and is said to be much tougher than s30v. It will also Take a better edge.

Crucible makes both 154CM and CPM154. The foreign equivalents are ATS-34 (standard), and RWL-34 (powdered).

I love the edge that CPM154 takes. It's very easy to sharpen, too.

I have a Buck 110 made for Bass Pro in CPM-154. Very easy to sharpen, much easier than S30V, and it takes an extremely fine edge, with comparable edge holding qualities to S30V, so far as I can tell from actual use. It also seems to be very tough, no chipping. This version has some kind of coating, very hard and durable. I believe that Mike Stewart over at Bark River has worked with CPM-154 and is impressed by it.

It's not finer grain size but finer carbide size !! CPM154 has become a favorite amongst custom makers. Easy for them to grind and polish. For the user it means easier to sharpen while having a more wear resistant edge. A favorite of mine too !

quick question: how does VG10 stand up to 154cm in use?

I have had a number of spydies in vg10 and my full sized grip was in 154cm as is my soon to arrive mini commander:D

154CM is a bit more wear resistant and a bit less tough than VG10 but they're close .CPM154 is better , more wear resistant and tougher !

If what you say is true - and I'm sure the custom makers know what they are talking about - then why don't the manufacturers use it? Why do they cling to the old style 154CM?

I imagine (guess) there is a price difference. Might seem negligible to us, but when you're making 1000's of pcs it might not be. idunno

Bark River made a run of Bravo-1s in CPM-154. You'll pay about $64 more for the stainless version of an identical knife in tool steel, but I've heard good things.

CPM154 doesn't cost me much more than 154CM...so if you're paying extra...;)

That said, CPM154 is now very hard to get !!

But it has been around for some time now...and many custom knifemakers use it (myself included).

IMHO, it is the best user-friendly stainless steel. S30V holds an edge longer, but is harder for some users to sharpen. 13C26 (and all its variations) is more stainless and is easier to grind/polish, but the edge doesn't last as long.

CPM154(154CM, ATS-34, etc) is the best all-around.....for makers, buyers, for sharpening, for edge-holding.

In other words, there are other steels that will outdo it in one category, but none (AFAIK) that will outdo it in ALL categories.

Make sense?
