154CM vs. ATS-34

Hello,

A while back there was a thread asking why manufacturers were swithcing back from ATS-34 to 154CM. It was stated that one of the reasons the industry went away from 154CM to begin with was that its production quality had diminished.

In either the latest TK or Blade in an article about something else they touched on the ATS-34 / 154CM thing. They were told by one manufacturer that the reason for the initial exodus from 154CM was because it was not available in sheets, making it prohibitively expensive to use for mass produced knives. Recently Crucible Steel started making 154CM in sheets so manufacturers started swithcing back.

Is tis the whole story? Does anyone know the whole story?

There are lies, darn lies and then, there is the "selective truth", meaning:
What is told is perfectly true, just totally irrelevant.

MBS,
This is another topic in which the forum's search function may be useful. IIRC, 154CM and ATS-34 share essentially identical formulas, only the former is manufactured in the U.S. and the latter is produced in Japan. I've heard that there was a period of time when the quality of 154CM was called into question, possibly due to unacceptable impurity levels or something along those lines. However, those problems are now a thing of the past and current 154CM is every bit as good as it's asian counterpart. There are folks around here who know tons more about this than I, so if I've misspoken please chime in.

I still think AUS8 is better than both. Who really knows why people are switching back? Maybe it's a fad thing....

Joe, Tommi,

Thanks for the info from the old thread - it was pretty much what I was looking for. I did indeed miss this previously.
