154cm vs VG-10 with Krein regrind?

Hey all.

I am going to send a knife to Tom Krein to FFG for me, and I have a benchmade griptilian. But what I am wondering is...

Is it worth it to go out and buy a Delica or endura just so I can FFG vg-10? Which would be best with his regrind on it? Which one has the best overall edge retention? I use my knife for mostly soft things so the sharpness should last a while on either.

I know a lot of Delicas and such get done so I'm thinking a griptilian would be really cool.

Please help me decide. Thanks. :)

I personally feel that the Delica or Endura would be better with a Krein then a Grip. If you can, get the tip pointed out more like the generation 3 knives, instead of the reinforced one they have now.

I agree with this, but I really like Spydercos. I had my Endura ZDP FFG to a .010" edge and had the spine flattened to a splinter picker tip (the blade looks like the Military's blade now). The grip would also benefit a lot, but Tom Krein has done FFG on so many Enduras and Delicas it is almost like the "starter" Krein regrind. The edge retention on each steel will be very similar. It really comes down to personal preference as well. You might also check the Usual Suspects Network where Tom has a forum or call him to see if he has any Enduras in stock. That would save you some time and shipping money and hassles. I know a couple weeks ago Tom had some Enduras and Pacific Salts in stock that he was selling.

The flip side is that if you like your Grip a lot it would be a great cutter as well with a Krein grind. Bringing a knife down to a .010" edge makes it cut way better and much easier to sharpen. I really think if you are happy with the edge retention of the Grip you won't notice too much of a difference going to VG-10, they are really close in edge retention, though I believe VG-10 has slightly finer grain structure and slightly outcuts 154CM on the CATRA machine. In the real world though it would be very hard for most people to tell the difference.

A Krein grind on any knife is good IMO.

Sounds good, I'll contact him to see about an endura or delica (maybe even a salt). If he doesn't have any, I'll compare the price of buying my own D4 or E4 and shipping it against what I value the Grip at.

You can't lose with a Krein grind. He can turn that Grip into a cutting machine if you end up sending it in. He can do FFG, a nice hollow grind, rework the spind, put on swedges, ect. Whatever you dream up he can do with the grinder.

yeah, but they wont be .010" behind the edge. Tom Krein thins them down (which also technically makes it weaker) but if you use your knife the way it is meant to be used, it will be like a laser.

As Mike said, you really can't go wrong with a Krein.

Maybe try something nice with your Grip? A Nice long swedge, with a FFG would be sweet.
