Hi.
I have purchased a 154ot recently with an etched tang stamp boxed with papers.
Does anyone know much about it, it is the first one i have seen like this.

...your photos havn't shown up Bawana....I can see under Post Reply you have tried to post photos, which is of course what we need.Hoo Roo

Hi Larry,
You are right i did try to post some photos but with no success.
How do I go about doing it?

G'day Chris, I have sent you email instructions mate. Good luck ..just persevere!....Hoo Roo;)

etched tang stamps were used by the factory when replacing knives under warranty. If the knife came back to the factory again they would know that the knife had already been replaced previously.

Please post photo. I have a few of the drop points but never saw one with an etched stamp. Thanks for that tidbit of info Rusty.

Hi,
The best i can do for now is look up ebay item no: 120623773562,which is the actual knife i purchased until i work out how to post the better photo.
Thanks Chris

Sometimes SFO's had etched rather than stamped tangs too. My fanciest LB-7 type has etchings done by Baron Industries.

G'day Bawana, Just had a chance to look at your knife from Ebay photo. I have just opened a Brown Box 154OT with the sheath never been out of the wrap paper.
The paperwork is different to the one you have purchased. The brown box had the 'Old Timer' paperwork and not generally the Custom paperwork...I do have those which genuinely came with Schrade Custom knives.... We really need to see close up of the etch on yours to give any opinion. I have put the original 154OT with another genuine USA Schrade however it has no tang stamping whatsoever. I could etch whatever I like on this now so you have to be careful. Mine is likely a 'second' and it did come from the Schrade factory sale....likely retrieved from a bin as so many were....not suggesting this is the same as yours however there are a lot of tricky dicky Schrades out there......and just as many sellers..........
With the photo of both handles on edge..can anyone pick the second....?....its the one closest to the box on the left....I can personally see nothing different between both knives apart from the tang grind?..Hoo Roo

Hi Russell,
I have seen a lot of knives & none with a tang stamp like this, when did they stop using the etched tang stamp?

On special runs with the black blades, most of those were made during the 80's there are some real nice Stag Bowies that have the same black blades and etched tangs. For the replacement knives from the factory, I don't know when they would of stopped this practice. The knives I have seen with these etches were made during the late 70's into the late 80's, not sure after that.

Very nice looking example!! The etched tang is very similar to one I have on a 171UH.

If it's a scam etch it sure is a good one. I think it's legit just because it's too "perfect". Breathe easy, I say. Cool variation.

I personally believe this to be a factory etch. Why and when exactly they did this, I can't say for certain. I have seen etched "stamps" on quite a few patterns, almost always sheath knives. If I were to guess, I would say that a percent of production were held unstamped for replacements. One stamped with the usual Schrade stamp would only usually be useful to replace a production knife under warranty. One with no stamp could be altered with an etch to replace not only regular production pieces, but any number of SFO's, some of which specified that there be no Schrade stamp, such as Sears on occasion. I was not the production engineer there, so this is all conjecture. I do doubt that it was done aftermarket, though "end of days completion (July, 2004 - October, 2004) is also a possibility.
