Fellow forumites,

A couple of days ago I managed to trade in my KH SN1 & 12" Sirupate with an HI 16.5" WWII - believed to have been acquired about 3-4 yrs ago by the original owner.

When I first inspected the khuk, it was in an excellent condition apart from some scratches on the beautifully made blade. The seller told me that the HI khukri was really abused by the owner thus the scratches without any problem to the edge, bolster, buttcap and hilt. Even the scabbard is still in perfect condition, minus the faded black color outer leather.I got the chance to "play" with it by swinging the blade in the air from left to right (off course the 45* angle was applied, as told by my Nepalese mates) - It felt that the knife was really made in the PERFECT balance. It felt a lot better in the hand compared to the standard British Army issue made by KH.

I am going to a camping trip with the children in 2 days and cant wait to test it in the tropical jungle (not exactly the jungle jungle - its a secondary jungle actually with nice waterfall running down stream).

Any opinion on WWII for camping purpose esp in tropical environment. I plan to bring ONLY 1 knife i.e. WWII just to prove a point.

Any advise would be appreciated. Thks.

you can bring backups and not use em and still prove your point. not that i lack faith in the knife or you, but seein as you haven't really used it yet, you never know. also, i went to the woods for three days with only one knfe, a gerber fatty, and i had no problems the whole trip so i'm not really sure that a camping trip will prove anything as well as a good old backyard chopmitzfah.

bottom line: hell yeah on that ww2. awesome.

Yep. Great knife. Totaly agree on your conclusion after swinging it. Wait till you get a few more. Hehehehe.

Welcome to the forum. Show us pics of your trip, and your collection. Read the safety thread. And have some fun.

Bring another knife for slicing your veggies and food prep. I don't know what point you're trying to make by only having one. But then, I always have a dozen or so knives on hand. I'm a junky.

You might want to chop up a 2x4 or chunk of fire wood before your head outdoors just to see how the blade performs. You might want to take a small pocket knife as well. HI khuks were made for the abuse!

I simply love my WWII; does just about everything. What it doesn't do, is fine detail work, and paper-thin slicing. ... which is why the Nepalese invented kardas. I prefer a swiss army knife, or a small, thin belt knife to the kardas that usually get shipped.

So take 2 knives; the WWII, and a companion knife. You'll be perfectly "authentic."

The WWII's are awesome. Like just about everyone else, i pack several when i camp. HOWEVER, if had to pick only one for a trip (and i have been in this spot before), it would be my 18" WWII. It was my second HI (of a collection spanning over 40 blades), and it has never failed me in all these years. If you HAVE to pack light like you are wanting, please take a SAK or folder with you. They are so much handier to carve roasting sticks for the kiddies than a 1.5lb knife;) Just my opinion.

Oh, and welcome to the forums!!:)

You cant go wrong with HI.
Excellent knife for your requirement. My 16.5 WWII by Sher is my favorite general purpose field knife. My blade has too heavy a convex on the edge to handle the thin springy stuff, but every thing else it handles very well. I have complete confidence in it for this purpose.

In regard to bringing a secondary blade on your outing, I would bring one,a
4"-5" blade utility knife.

It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. My son, who is currently in the Navy Land Warfare Division, likes to use the term "one is none two is one" for critical elements of his gear/kit for field work.

"Two is one, and one is none." This is especially said in Basic in the Army, to stress the importance of moving and acting in "battle buddy" teams. Speaking to a drill sergeant without an accompanying battle buddy is usually cause for at least a few minute smoking (punitive physical training).

A WWII 16.5" is a terrific all-around choice. Like pretty much everyone else, I do suggest bringing at least one other knife. Another good phrase: "better to have it, and not need it, than need it, and not have it." ;)

Welcome to the Forum. :)

Thks very much guys - I'll definitelyl bring along a SAK, just in case.

BTW, I have tested the knife on some bamboo trees near the office yesterday evening and it cut like nobody's business, I mean in 3 strokes I felled a dry bamboo tree about 4" in diameter which I think outperformed my golok & KH SN1.

Hope the landscape contractor will clear the mess by today.

I'll post a WWII review with pix after the trip. Thks again.
