I've had the #16 in the Cooper River (S.C.) 5 times now, and besides a few scratches on the handle from scraping the bottom, it's no worse for wear. I've tried to attach a pic, so I hope it shows OK. Found this tooth on the first of the 5 dives...View attachment 61261

Help! I'm not very good at posting these pictures. Any help would be appreciated. Here's the original again:

Those Megalodon teeth have always interested me. Cool find! Love seeing the Randall at work even more.

mega,

That #16 looks great strapped on your leg. I might have to wear mine to our neighbor pool next summer. :D

Is the Cooper River salt or fresh water? How's the sheath holding up?

Tom

It's brackish and definitely has some salt in it as you see freshwater and saltwater critters mixed together in the same areas. Sheath is doing well; I rinsed it well with fresh water afterwards and it looks fine. Long term, if it was used in saltwater, I would guess some kind of good conditioner would be beneficial.

Watch out for that chlorine in the pool, though!

i thought leather and water didnt mix?

I believe it's a wax impregnated sheath.

Treated leathers have been used in outdoor/underwater conditions for a long time; hundreds, maybe thousands of years. Properly treated and cared for with waxes and or oils and leather items will last longer than most people think. Before synthetic materials most everything was made out of leather that was used outdoors and many still are: saddles, boots, sheaths, holsters, chaps, coats (dusters) ...............

Today, synthetic items are usually cheaper and easier to care for and more readily available than good custom made leather products; but I don't think anything looks as good as or has the feel of a quality leather made item and if taken care of will outlast a lot of synthetic items.

Very nice tooth!

I also like that Palm and Moon diver-down sticker!

An off-subject question, but what is the crescent moon and palm tree all about? I have seen these decals on vehicles and curious what the meaning is.

BTW nice find megafriday.

It's on the South Carolina flag.

The state flag of South Carolina was officially adopted in 1861. It has a white crescent and a white palmetto tree on a blue ground. Three white crescents (on a blue background) were first used on a South Carolina banner protesting the Stamp Act in 1765. In 1775, Colonel William Moultrie designed a banner for South Carolina troops; it had a white crescent on a blue field. When South Carolina seceded from the Union, the palmetto tree was added to the flag. The palmetto tree was chosen because this tree had helped South Carolinians defeat the British in a battle at Sullivan's Island (during the Revolutionary War). The South Carolinians built a fort out of palmetto wood, and when the British fired cannonballs at the fort, instead of knocking the fort down, the soft palmetto wood just absorbed the cannonballs.
