My proffession allows me to spend a lot of time in nature. I have allways apperciated cutting tools as my usefull companions. Knives, folding saws, axes and hatchets are my allmost every day companions for last 25 years; a knife in pocket I have already as a kid. I have also made and modyfied lot of knives and make numerous leather sheats. With constant use of sharp tools, expeiences and extra education (literature, internet) my knewldge about them grows and becomes more and more mature
. My vision of an ideal cutting tool changes from time to time (and yes, I know, there isn't such a thing as an ideal knife
). Years ago I glorify big half a kilo knives. Last years my favourite knives were scandi knives. In last time I am obsessed with hatchets (my wife say so. I think this is just increased affection) and their usability.
Especcially I apperciate hatchets as a woodworking tool for tasks which can be finished with knife, but you can do them with hatchet easily. Hatchet has become my regular companion for outdoors and used tool in my workshop. I have at least 10 different. If I am going to a walk or hike in nature without a hatchet I am feeling half naked. This is as much unpleasant as are unpleasent amased looks of people
eek
I met when they saw me walking around with hatchet over my shoulder.
Thats why I desided to make very little pocket sized hatchet, but still big enough to be functional. I reshaped little 0,5 kilo hatchet head, make a little handle and lether sheath (secured to unintentional opening when in pocket) with different carrying options. I think I succeed. Of course I prefer a bigger axe for cutting trees, but as a little usable tool and as a device for preservation of my mental health (you know, not feeling half naked
) is extraordinary!
