I received my 17 inch Gelbu Special today from the DOTD of 2/14. It is made by Rakjumar. I just wanted to say that this is a great knife and it looks much better than the Tarwar sword by Tirtha that I bought a couple of weeks earlier. The knife feels great and the fit and finish is very good. The Tarwar is a big hulk of a blade. It looks pretty good but there is black epoxy in a lot of places and the wood handle is not as nicely finished as on the Gelbu. I'm very impressed with this Gelbu and I got it for $98 total including shipping. The one thing I don't understand is that the Kharda and Chakma little knives seem to be almost useless. Are they there for looks? I would prefer if they made the handles maybe 1 or 2 inches longer. As they stand the blades are small and that is ok but the handle for these knives would fit a baby not an adult.

Kazushi,

You probably have a large mitt. I would say the current handle is about 5" in length?
The karda and chakmak has different purpose; Karda for utility use and chakmak as sharpener and flint starter.

Do go to the sticky's for more reading.

@jay the Khukuri handle is perfect. It is the karda and chakmak that are way too small. I know that one is for sharpening and the other is just a basic utility knife but they seem to have very tiny handles.

I think it'll be fine for small mitts like mine. Nepali folks have small hands too. But I agree I'd like them longer too :)

the really tiny ones are there for show/tradition. they are probably the single most lost/missing item in the khukuri ensemble. i'd stick them in a drawer if this is to be a user.

some people remove the frog, remove the leather bits that hold the not really useful teeny knives, and reinstall the frog. it helps the scabbard lay flatter against your body & makes it easier to carry. some people remove them & stick a mora in their place. whatever floats your boat.

This is what happens to all my user Khuks smaller than about 20".

good idea maybe I can find another small utility knife that I like better in place of current one or remove it altogether.
