What steels where prominent for axes in the 1700s and 1800s? Whould like to know. Thanks.

The steels during those times did not have the same kind of grading as the do today. You simply found them classified by the process by which they were made. Typically these would be blister steel, shear steel, cast steel, or silver steel. The actual composition would vary from supplier to supplier or even batch to batch due to the comparatively unpredictable nature of those methodologies.

Pure iron and unalloyed iron with up to 1% carbon, material unquantifiable in many regards, subject to the knowledge and experience/training of an individual blacksmith
